Wilkinson James | The Honeytones (Blues/Honky-Tonk) $6
Friday, June 22 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Wilkinson James have been performing their distinctive blend of blues, folk, and honky-tonk in and around the Twin Cities area since singer-songwriters Liz Wilkinson and AJ Scheiber first met up in 2008. A fan once described their original songs as “the bastard offspring of Townes Van Zandt and June Carter Cash,” which has always sounded about right to them. Their debut album (simply titled “Wilkinson James”) dropped in early 2015, and featured 13 original songs, a top-notch band of local session players, and keen production guidance from Ben Kyle of Romantica. Their EP Abandon released in Fall 2016, and reflected the growth of the original duo into a full band, with saxophone, dobro, and a swinging rhythm section providing touches of torch, swing, and American Songbook stylings in addition to the band’s original folk and country roots.
The Honeytones are a sort of retro 50’s folk-pop band featuring Laconia Koerner on vocals and rhythm guitar, Danny Shaheen on lead guitar, and Rory Alt on upright bass. We’re a trio that formed slowly, letting the music lead us to each other. Laconia had several tunes that were looking for a band when she met Danny, and his intuitive, studied playing style blended nicely with her vocals. The collaboration gradually yielded a sound of its own, and in time, a few of the songs begged for more rhythm. When Rory stepped in, it was as if his swinging bass lines had been there all along. We hope you’ll feel that way about our music — fresh sounds that feel like old friends.
