Big Lake | Matty O’Reilly (Indie Rock/Singer-Songwriter) $7

Saturday, March 23, 2019 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Minneapolis band Big Lake debuted in 2014 with a self titled LP full of songs that were as ear-wormy as they were well-crafted. Their songwriting mixed with deftly layered guitar work and lush vocal harmonies helped them arrive at a unique blend of indie folk rock and alt-country. The release drew support from City Pages and saw regular airplay from St.Paul/Minneapolis MPR station 89.3 The Current.

The forthcoming Big Lake record dives further into their country roots. Their evolution from synths and driving bass lines to a pedal steel and country shuffles lends a more natural setting for Mazurek’s voice and songs. Their new record is full of two-part harmony and carefully crafted songs, and is instantly reminiscent of Minnesota mainstays the Jayhawks. Their new sound does a great job channeling country classics like Sweethearts of the Rodeo era-Byrds and early career Merle Haggard. Their follow up is set for release fall of 2019.

Matty O’Reilly is a Minnesota native, a little older than your brother but probably younger than your dad. The songwriter and front-man for local Minneapolis bands Coolidge, Old Grey Whistle Test, The Home Wreckers and the Molly O’Reilly Orchestra, was at one point dubbed “the consummate opening act” by Chris Reimenschnieder of the Star Tribune. His original song “Bar Whiskey” was included in infamous radio DJ Jack Sparks Top 5 Break Up Songs of all time, 2nd behind Dead Flowers by The Rolling Stones.

His music floats in and out of alt-country and folk, but gently blended with layers reminiscent of the sweet winds whispering across the Americana plains and a honky tonk roadhouse jukebox.
