Combining intimate jazz improvisation with cinematic melodies and rock-and-roll verve, DRINKING BIRD is a new trio that draws from a liberally defined American Songbook to build a sound of its own. Comprising New Yorker Eladio Rojas on the drums, Norway-bred guitarist Jacob Matheus, and Pacific Northwest native Tree Palmedo on trumpet, the members of Drinking Bird have also performed with folk singers, rock bands, and a host of jazz greats. While they had played together several times over the years in both Boston and New York, the three officially formed Drinking Bird in 2017 after a series of informal improvisational get-togethers on New York’s Upper West Side.

In addition to original material by its members, the trio tackles numerous jazz standards, country tunes, and pop songs reflective of the band’s eclectic taste; the sparse instrumentation lends a uniquely nuanced approach to Elliott Smith and Thelonious Monk alike. Several video projects and a debut album are in the works.
