Miles of Pianos: The Larry McDonough Quartet Plays the Music of Miles Davis’ Pianists Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea (Jazz) $10

Sunday, April 7, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Miles Davis formed many influential groups, and within them, a who’s who of the great jazz pianists of the 20th Century. Three of them were Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea. Bill Evans first worked with Miles in 1958, but he left to pursue his trio concepts, returning for the recording of Kind of Blue in 1959 along with John Coltrane on tenor sax, Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, Jimmy Cobb on drums, and Paul Chambers on bass. Afterward he went on to redefine the structure of jazz trios, with the piano, bass, and drums improvising equally together in many albums, including Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby. Bill died in 1980 at age 51.

In 1963, Herbie Hancock joined Miles along with Ron Carter on bass, Tony Williams on drums, and Wayne Shorter on saxes. While the group recorded many noteworthy albums, such as E.S.P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, and Nefertiti, Herbie recorded a series of albums with his groups, including Takin’ Off, Empyrean Isles, Maiden Voyage, and Speak Like a Child. Herbie is 78 and still performs in various projects.

Chick Corea joined Miles in 1968 and appeared on the recordings Filles de Kilimanjaro, In a Silent Way, and Bitches Brew. Chick went on to form the group Return to Forever, first with Flora Purim on vocals, Joe Farrell on flute and soprano saxophone, Airto Moreira on drums, and Stanley Clarke on bass, on the albums Return to Forever and Light As a Feather. Chick is 77 and like Herbie still performs in various projects.

The Larry McDonough Quartet will perform the music of Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea. They will begin the Bill Evans Trio in 1961 at the Village Vanguard, then with Herbie Hancock’s music throughout the 1960s, concluding with the jazz fusion of Chick Corea’s first Return to Forever group. Come see and hear what Miles started.
