The story goes that the young Australian singer, songwriter and one-of-a-kind guitar virtuoso first picked up his instrument of choice as a five-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12, training classically throughout his teens and performing solo wherever he could, honing his craft and developing what would become the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he left school, turned professional and hit the road.

Sapphire is a femme pop punk band from the twin cities who love to play music and engage with folks. We aim to create an inclusive environment in the Minneapolis/St. Paul teen punk scene since representation can be somewhat limited.

David Huss is a Minneapolis based singer-songwriter with a writing style rooted in Americana, folk and upbeat acoustic rock. David's songs are written with an optimistic perspective and are inspired by life's transitions.

In 2019 David recorded his first full length album - Intuition - and simultaneously
formed his band 'The Headwaters'. The past year consisted of full band performances around the state of Minnesota, finishing the album, and honing the sound of the full band into the finished upbeat folk rock sound they have become known for. 'The Headwaters'
are Lara Solveig on violin and harmony, Wesley Miller on percussion, Danny Gilles on keys and harmony, Noah Cameron on bass, and Hannah Hmeidie on on French Horn.

2019 has been a stellar year for The April Fools, beginning with the April 1 release of their latest CD "Third" -- engineered and produced by Mike Owens at Blackberry Way Studios, and mastered by Andy Walters at Abbey Road Studios, London, UK.

Featuring a mix of originals and covers, "Third" finds the band dialing in a more straight up rock-oriented sound, while maintaining the focus on vocal harmony and classic songwriting that made their first two releases so unique.

"Third" has received radio airplay on more than 200 radio stations in the U.S. and beyond, including features on Tom Lambert's internationally syndicated "The Independent Music Show," "The Razor and Die Show" on WLUW in Chicago, and KFAI, 89.3 The Current, and WEQY locally in the Twin Cities.

Bill Evans was born William John Evans in 1929 and was one of the most influential jazz pianists in history. His use of impressionist harmony, block chords, complex rhythms, and simultaneous improvisation of group members redefined groups, composition, and jazz pianists.

The Larry McDonough Quartet (LMQ) will feature the musical life of Bill Evans from beginning to end.

Jazz curator Steve Kenny called Larry the Bill Evans scholar of Minnesota. Larry grew up listening and transcribing Evans’ music, having seen his live performances in the 1970s. His shows and recordings feature the music of Evans. Larry has become friends with Evans’ widow Nenette, who supports Larry’s projects and provides him with some of Bill Evans’ manuscripts. Larry is the only Minnesotan invited to study the Bill Evans Archive at the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies of Southeastern Louisiana University. Movie director Bruce Spiegel chose Larry to host Minnesota showings of his documentary film “Bill Evans Time Remembered.”

Singer/songwriter, Vicky Emerson, has been heralded by the Minneapolis Star Tribune for her gorgeous, dusky voice and songwriting chops on previous releases but her new album, Steady Heart, which she self-produced, firmly establishes her as an essential, strong female voice in Americana music. Steady Heart, has received critical acclaim, helping her to rise to #4 on the European Americana Charts, #52 on the US Americana Album Chart and #34 on the Americana Singles Chart with her hit, "The Reckoning." No Depression raved that she is "...one of the pre-eminent independent singer/songwriters working in Americana. Her lyrical acumen is readily apparent for any listener, those unfamiliar with her work and longtime fans alike, but the lean economy of her poetic musings separates her work from performers who might otherwise overdo their desired effect on the audience." Laura Hugo is originally from the Navajo Nation but has been calling the Twin Cities her home for the last 7 years. She’ll make you feel the feels with her melodic and catchy tunes about heartbreak. Remember sitting in your living room as kid? The shag carpet tickling the back of your legs. You were chewing on your Marathon bar and sipping from a can of Rondo Soda while watching your favorite TV show…was it CHiPs or S.W.A.T.?… Doesn’t matter they both were great and so was the music in them. The Neighborhood Trio might just take you back to those times with their groovy 70’s theme song inspired tunes, but sorry Rondo is long gone, but I’m sure you will find something from the bar to crush your thirst!

Family Three are just two guys and one gal who love music. They would describe their sound as "Blindie-Soulk" - Blues, Indie, Soul and Folk. They have been playing some form of music since they were kids, but it wasn't until recently that they decided to take the next step, and are on the journey of finding out what it means to put the passion of music in the front seat.

Liam Gerard is a Minneapolis-based singer, songwriter, recording artist and performer. With roots in pop music of the 90’s to his adult addiction with Motown and the blues of Ray Charles. The music has been described as pulsing and melodic, with an attention to reflective lyrics based on experience. Tastes of alternative, blues, folk and pop give the music an eclectic feel as it spans multiple genres. Liam Gerard wrote all 11 tracks on his debut album “Belle and Music” and funded the entire project without a record contract  over the course of 25 months of work recording it. Each song represents a moment/ event in time captured in the mind of a man utterly impassioned by his muse; a woman he refers to as, Belle.

Liam Gerard is currently in the works for his follow up to, Belle and Music. Be on the look out for new material in Late Spring, or follow on all Social Media to keep up to date and to learn about shows in the Minneapolis area and beyond.

Bryan was born in Lawton/Fort Sill, (Comanche County) Oklahoma into a musical family. Growing up he listened to all kinds of music. His parents played in cover bands and thanks to his father, he learned to play drums while he was still very young. Drums came natural to him and he became so good at it that his parents frequently invited him to play with them. Since their bands played all different styles of music, White feels it gave him a great perspective and helped to make him the diverse artist that he is today. "Although country music has my heart, I still love and respect all kinds of musical expression."

Kurt Jorgensen has been long time band leader of the Kurt Jorgensen Band, releasing eight albums to date and receiving the praise of fans and critics alike. The Minnesota Music Awards has presented Kurt with Singer of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.

Brianna has toured nationwide with other artists as a bandleader and solo. Brianna has performed multiple times at South by Southwest, impressing industry luminaries and fans.

The two troubadours teamed up to record Brianna’s debut solo album “Wandering” with Kurt acting as producer and arranger for Brianna’s multi-instrumentalist talents. It did not take long for the pair to team up as songwriters and performers to form The Jorgensens: a team in life on and off stage. The sound is powerful and undeniably fresh, taking root in rock, blues and some southern kissed Americana soul.

Laurent started playing clubs in Minneapolis while still in high school, signing his first record deal when he was twenty-two. His fifth album "Love Don't Let Me Down" was produced in Nashville, where Laurent is a full time songwriter.

"Nashville has been great. I've been able to work with songwriters who's names I used to read in the liner notes of my favorite records, grammy winners, and major label recording artists."

ADIOS is Cory Branan’s death record. Not the cheeriest of openings, but like all of Branan’s mercurial work, it’s probably not what you think. As funny and defiant as it is touching and sad, this self-dubbed “loser’s survival kit” doesn’t spare its subjects or the listener.

Not even Branan’s deceased father is let off the hook. In the tender homage “The Vow” he drolly cites his father’s favorite banality “that’s what you get for thinking” as “probably not the best lesson for kids.” For most songwriters that would be the punchline but Branan pushes through words and, in his father’s actions, finds a kind of “genius in the effortless way he just ‘did’.”

White Sweater is a folk / rock / pop group that plays the original songs of its own members’ previous groups, along with a few carefully selected covers, as well as their own new original material. Lead singer Aaron Seymour began his Minneapolis rock career as a teenager in the 1980's. He has co-written, sung lead vocals and released albums as front-man for the Widgets in the 1980's, the Delilahs in the 1990's, X Ray Hip in the 2000's, and Petty Demons earlier in this current decade. Guitarist / singer Craig Teiken has been the main singer / songwriter for the Wood in the 1990's and Rob the Carpenter in the 2000s'. He has been and/or continues to be a writer, guitarist, bass player and singer in X Ray Hip, Dave Rave and the Governors, Edie Rae and the Blaze Kings (and offshoot Edie Rae and Side Salad), and many other groups. He is currently producing a solo record of his own material in Minneapolis. Guitarist / singer Edie Rae has been a singer for local heroes Lolo’s Ghost. She has so far recorded and released two albums of her own original material in her group Edie Rae and the Blaze Kings. She also lends her talents to various bands and musical projects around the Twin Cities. Bassist/singer Tim Francis has been a member of the Fontanas, Fire Sermon, the Delilahs and Petty Demons. He is currently working on his debut album of original material with producer Rob Genadek in Minneapolis. Percussionist/singer Joseph Pettini performed in several bands in his hometown in the Bay Area of California. Since arriving in Minneapolis in the early 90's, he’s played a prominent role in numerous projects, including Tambuca, Big Red Ball, Electric Warrior, and First Avenue’s annual “Rock for Pussy” Bowie tribute. He currently leads his new band, Hurdy Gurdy, featuring several notable Minneapolis musicians, including guitarist Steve Brantseg (Suburbs, Phones, etc.) Drummer Clay Swanson is one of the most versatile and respected drummers in the Twin Cities. Swanson has been a member of many band, including the Widgets and Petty Demons. He is currently drummer with Edie Rae and the Blaze Kings, Earthquakes and Heartaches, and Hurdy Gurdy. In addition to those bands and White Sweater, Clay often lends his talents to numerous other projects in and around town.

Over the span of three critically acclaimed full length albums (2017's 'Asilomar', 2013's 'Fathom Lane' and 2012's 'Down By Half') and several subsequent singles Fathom Lane has been getting international attention for their wonderfully indefinable sound. Michael Ferrier's songs are at once accessible and memorable, but are also sneaky with their quietly innovative touches. Ferrier cites classic touchstones such as The Velvet Underground, Tom Petty, Gram Parson's "Cosmic American Music", and the Laurel Canyon songwriters, but even with these influences Fathom Lane manages a contemporary sound. The blend of Ferrier's steady and simple tenor with fellow singer Ashleigh Still's more mellifluous soul is a main feature of the rich sound Fathom Lane brews; the band invite their listeners in and then delight them with audio surprises.

The Fourth Wall is an up and coming Jazz Quartet from Saint Paul, MN consisting of drummer Nathanael Smith, bassist James Towns, and pianist/saxophonist Rhys Leroux, along with a rotation of different musicians. Drawing from a variety of influences, The Fourth Wall's eclectic sound is infectious and thought-provoking, appealing to a diverse audience.

A teller of tall tales and a singer of short tunes - Luke - more comfortable at a campfire than a cattle ranch - attempts to shed a simple shining light on the stories of the disastrous day and melancholy mind. This will be a rare performance as Luke will be joined by Elliot Heinz on drums - Lauren Anderson on Bass Guitar - and other special guests.

Deep, dark sea folk. Superior Siren released the debut, full-length, self-titled album on January 12th, 2018. The collection of songs, written by Laura Sellner, portrays the waves of raw emotion and alluring intensity that lives within the music. The album features four songs previously released on the solo Superior Siren EP ‘Lotus in the Muck.’ Those tracks have since grown in captivation with the addition of cellist Rachel Gobin, bassist Nyssa Krause, and drummer Emma Deaner. The remaining six songs of new material complete the album with swells of enchanting melodies and moods of ominous storms. The album will intrigue listeners with dream-like serenades and eerie echoes of doom.

Joe Kopel is a Minneapolis based songwriter with a unique sense of time, space, and style.

Vacillating between laugh-out-loud imagery and painstaking sincerity, Zaq Baker's songs dwell on night-owl heartbreak and on growing up. His lyrics and arrangements reconcile fiercely original rock piano architecture; the adolescent spirit and catchy-or-die attitude of pop-punk; and a healthy amount of musical theatre. This night at the Aster marks a very special solo performance to feature a fair amount of new material.

Kraig Jarret Johnson is an American songwriter, singer, guitarist and recording artist from Minneapolis who has performed and recorded with Run Westy Run, The Jayhawks, Golden Smog, Iffy, Joseph Arthur & The Lonely Astronauts, members of R.E.M., Ray Davies of The Kinks and his own band, Kraig Jarret Johnson & The Program.

Good Morning Bedlam has become an innovative force in the midwest folk scene. Their shows are known for their contagious energy, with members careening about the stage, jumping and dancing with a wild playfulness. With tight soaring three part harmonies, and thumping kick-drum, they captivate their audience night after night with no intention of slowing down. In 1977, the band Flamingo was formed by Robert Wilkinson (guitars, vocals), Johnny Rey (guitars), Jody Ray (bass guitar), Bob Meide (percussion) and Joseph Behrend (keyboards and vocals). The release of “Flamingo” in 1978, recorded at Tracks on Fifth, included the songs “Smart Girl,” “We Do What We Like,” “One More Night” and one of the band’s most popular and enduring songs, “I Remember Romance.” Critics took note of Flamingo and the EP with descriptive praise: “Hard edged Stones-like rock’n’roll. East Coast street anthems coupled with Midwestern optimism and enthusiasm.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

Over the next 40 years, Flamin' Oh's (as they were renamed soon after their first release) would continue to evolve, perform, and record – with Wilkinson as the enduring frontman. They were a pioneer in the early 1980s’ developing music video industry and toured nationally and internationally throughout the 1980s.

Dan Neale is a guitarist who moves easily from blues and country to pop, jazz, and rock. Fingerpicking, flatpicking -- he's got it covered. Back when he was a high school kid in Chattanooga, he began to think about a career in music. He played in the school band and in a group formed by his brother. That led to work with a slew of bar bands and a full-time stint in country rock group called Rawhide. In 1986, he left Tennessee for Minnesota ("I married a woman who hates hot weather," he says). As a studio player and sideman, he has worked with Martin Zellar, Bobby Vee, and a host of others. Recently, he teamed up with singer/songwriter Rex Haberman to do a CD aptly called Neale & Haberman (Reissner Records). A solo album in the works, due for release in December.

Joe Hysell is a songwriter who has built a catalogue of songs with a strong foundation in what might be called “country” music but is influenced by folk, rock n roll and even gospel music. Joe has roots in the soil of America and a wayfaring spirit recognizable in his musical pilgrimages – from the Blue Ridge Mountains to Los Angeles to roads unnamed and unknown. Based in Minneapolis, Hysell's newest release “Songs to Be Sung from the Porch” is a collaboration with his long-time pal and playing partner Dan Neale. Recorded in one sitting in the summer of 2019, the duo locked into a groove that unleashed the subtle nuances of a few of Joe’s more delicate songs. Since 2011 he has released two full length albums and 2 5-song EPs to positive reception in the Twin Cities music community. Michael Madden of CityPages called his 2017 “Workin’ Too Hard” release “an efficient, consistent, and unpretentious five-song collection that leans outlaw country, with the deep-voiced Hysell proving himself to be a captivating singer and storyteller.”

Tim Houlihan (guitars & vocals) and Paul Madsen (bass & vocals) have been playing Americana originals and covers together for 6 years. Inspired by the movie “Echo from the Canyon,” they’ve created two sets of tunes from the Laurel Canyon scene including Joni Mitchell, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Beach Boys, Jackson Browne and Carole King.

Rich Mattson and the Northstars started in 2014 as a cosmic folk group. Rich Mattson and his partner Germaine Gemberling have been writing songs, recording, and performing together since 2010. Each album seems to get them closer to the source of rock and roll. Their latest, “Totem,” (their 4th as Rich Mattson and the Northstars) featuring the rhythm section of drummer (and longtime Mattson bandmate) Keely Lane and bassist Kyle Westrick, is loaded with jangle, harmony, and melodic energy. The group performs all around Minnesota and beyond and has been invited to share the stage with such notable acts as the Minus 5, the Jayhawks, and Trampled By Turtles. Somewhat of a Minnesota music staple, Mattson is well known for his songwriting and outstanding showmanship as well as his work with literally thousands of artists at his Sparta Sound recording studio.

Katy was born and raised in London, UK but in the past dozen or so years has established herself as one of the busiest musicians in Minnesota. She has appeared at Festivals in the Midwest and UK, such as the Ukulele Festival of Great Britain, The Grand Northern Ukulele Festival, Taste Of Minnesota, Stars of the North, Big Turn Fest, and Hazelfest. Her newest record ‘Suit Of hearts’ Was just named as a top ten record of the year by the Star Tribune. She has just returned from her third UK tour.

The live performance is a whimsically emotional escapade through the chasms of our, yes, feelings.. Dashed with spontaneous and clever banter, mirth and woe, you will probably cry and quite possibly laugh, a lot. Wielding claw-hammer banjo, Irish bouzouki, mandolin, and acoustic guitar the duo sings predominantly original music as well as reworked traditional ballads gathered from their travels.

There are more harmonies than shred but a tiny bit of shred in a soft way.
We call it soft shred.
There are long notes on pads and there are synths that are nice to hear but boring to play.
I think drums are for mallets, but drummers tend to disagree.
I like songs that are about both what a person knows and what a person doesn’t know and I’m sometimes trying to help but mainly just observing.

David moved across the alley from Karl. Steve bumped into David at a bar. David took a job at Dan M’s company (former Mel). Dan M. had a cousin Brian (former Mel). Brian had been in another band with Jeff. Jeff played on and off with current Dan A. And simple as that… The Melvilles. We all write and arrange songs together. The result is a friendly mongrel with a twangy, funky, folkish, bluesy, jangly, rock & roll bark.

Art Vandalay is a Twin Cities band that plays a unique brand of laid-back folk/Americana with a vibe that is “impossibly catchy” (Duluth News-Tribune). Billy Johnson is a singer/songwriter from Minneapolis. Billy was the lead singer of The Hillcats, and is the lead singer of Billy Johnson’s Roadshow. He also has an acoustic duo called B-TEAM with George McKelvey. Billy has recorded 10 CDs. He strums a Gibson guitar with soul, and has a great vocal range.

The Midnight Choir Social Club's sound was born under the Gospel Tent of the New Orleans Jazz Festival, in the protester-filled streets of Selma, and on Muddy Waters' front porch in the Mississippi Delta. The drums (Jess Pierce) and bass (Barb Brynstad) form the bedrock of this band, creating soulful grooves and a solid pocket. Funky, melodic guitar (Tim Frantzich) and saxophone flourishes (Dave Marden) accentuate the steady rhythm. The heartfelt and deep pathos of the vocalists, led by David Ballman with help from the Resistor Sisters (Lucinda Plaisance, Shelly Siegel), deliver gospel-inspired originals and inventive covers (Staple Singers, Tennessee Ernie Ford) that make the angels and the demons dance for joy.

The Hive’s purpose is to provide community and opportunity for femme artists in the Twin cities to perform, network, expand and strengthen skill sets, and to give and receive support from other female identifying artists. Our goal is diversification and inclusion of femme identifying musicians. We are just getting started, so stay tuned as we press in toward achieving our goals and support local music by femme artists.

Patty and The Buttons preach the gospel of hot rhythm and happy feet. The band is similar to what you would find in a dance hall, cafe or nightclub anywhere around the world between 1920-1940. Despite being an ensemble firmly rooted in tradition, the band presents their music without being shackled to history. They play their own compositions as well as takes on music of the era. Patty’s eclectic taste gives the band diverse influences including New Orleans Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Gypsy Melodies, Ragtime Piano Blues, Jug Music and 1930′s Popular Song. The core instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar and bass is light and swift, but also melancholic and lush when it needs to be. Patty , mostly known as an accordionist doubles as the bands vocalist. His voice is inspired most by the old time hollers and croons from the dawn of recording once described as “Tom Waits meets Rudy Vallee.” More than anything, The Buttons is a group that is always enjoying themselves… Which seems to give audiences permission to do the same.

Laura Hugo is originally from the Navajo Nation but has been calling the Twin Cities her home for the last 7 years. She’ll make you feel the feels with her melodic and catchy tunes about heartbreak. You’ll probably find her frequenting open mics, playing at various Minneapolis music venues and watching others play shows at least 4 days a week.

Kraig Jarret Johnson is an American songwriter, singer, guitarist and recording artist from Minneapolis who has performed and recorded with Run Westy Run, The Jayhawks, Golden Smog, Iffy, Joseph Arthur & The Lonely Astronauts, members of R.E.M., Ray Davies of The Kinks and his own band, Kraig Jarret Johnson & The Program.

Chris Holm is a country blues musician based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A fingerstyle guitar picker and harmonica player, Chris channels the high-spirited liveliness of Charley Patton, attacking his guitar strings with abandon, and shouting along in a gravelly howl, later to channel Blind Willie Johnson on the lonesome sounds of a weeping slide guitar and Jimmie Rodgers on a blue yodel.  

Chris is joined by longtime friends and collaborators Berek Awend on keys and Mark Larson on drums to form a potent electric country blues trio.

American Pleasure Dome is a four piece rock and roll band from Minneapolis, Mn.

Band leader and songwriter Hans Schumacher writes songs drawing from a musical palette that includes rock, alt country, and folk. As an artist, Hans tries to connect with listeners by creating enticing sonic landscapes. His songs share a playful perspective on the complex issues of modern life. As a band, American Pleasure Dome is musically explorative, and brings a wide range of influences to their sound.
