David Harland has felt the pull of music all of his life. His music has been described as innovative, introspective and expressive. David is a fingerstyle guitarist and singer/songwriter in the tradition of great innovators like Michael Hedges, Nick Drake, David Wilcox and Billy McLaughlin.

Billy Johnson is a singer/songwriter from Minneapolis. Billy was the lead singer of The Hillcats, and is the lead singer of Billy Johnson’s Roadshow. He also has an acoustic duo called B-TEAM with George McKelvey. Billy has recorded 10 CDs. He strums a Gibson guitar with soul, and has a great vocal range.

Jeremy Ylvisaker is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer who has worked with John Prine, Jenny Lewis, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Andrew Bird, Sandra Bernhard, Damo Suzuki (Can), members of Prince’s New Power Generation, Mouse on Mars, Swamp Dogg, The Suburbs, film maker Chuck Statler ("The Truth About Devolution"), Merce Cunningham dance company, and many others playing on five continents in venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, The Cape Town Jazz Festival, The Ed Sullivan Theater (The Late Show with David Letterman), and other television programs including Austin City Limits and the Colbert Report. He composes and improvises a variety of instrumental music, some of which to accompany dance performances such as "Stripe Tease", some of which for use in films such as "Pitchfork Unsung: Dan Corrigan", "Rhythmic" (feat. Andrew Bird), and "Trophy Husband." Some just for listening while you do your thing. And a lot of rock n roll.

It’s not so much a sound as it is an essence; there is no need to be able to distinguish it before you can trust it. A Piano in Every Home’s second album North American Review is a collection that captures a poignant picture of the beauty and pain that comes with growing up. Written in the space and time reserved for examination, these eight tracks were coaxed from their bated origins with a delicate confidence and trial and error.

What started out as a duo of Travis Erickson on guitar and vocals, and Jacob Pavek on piano, the two childhood friends incorporated the doctrine of their live show into North American Review, which includes Jake Wallenius on drums and Mark Newcome Kartarik on bass. The quartet transformed the wide-eyed tunes into a full-grown collation.

The Legend of the Actual Wolf

There are outlaws, and there are outlaws. Some practice the pose and cultivate the image, though seldom dirty their soft, bourgeois hands with anything actually outside the law. When they do, it is often despicable, irresponsible or just plain mundane. The Actual Wolf, however, is a real outlaw and has pled guilty to it. Between the bust and before the trial AW recorded a pair of EPs, each showing ‘another side of the Wolf’. The first is USA, an everyman’s acoustic album that channels both Woody and Zimmerman on a smuggler’s road trip on the cop-laden corridor of the I-80. The second—Lightning & the Wolf— conjures a 30-something’s symphony to Gawd, a rock EP at times so ethereal that it floats like smoke up into the aether, at others so earthy & grounded you can almost feel the parole. This is not music that pleads for forgiveness—the man has given his freedom as a sacrament at the altar of his beliefs. Rather, these are songs of redemption. Actual Wolf has paid a price, but like many deals with devils, seems to have come out the greater for it.

Launched in 2016 with the EP, “My Mom Says I Have A Rich Inner Life,” Minneapolis grunge-pop band Lunch Duchess has continued to make cathartic jams for the sardonic and the heartbroken. Front person/drummer Katharine Seggerman tends to write songs as a therapeutic exercise: sitting with difficult situations until the truth materializes in a melody, and then protecting that truth with the help of a loud rock band. She is joined by Sam Frederick on guitar, Nicky Steves on synthesizers, and Matthew Sandstedt on bass, and together...they are Lunch Duchess.

The Larry McDonough Quartet will perform the music of Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea. They will begin the Bill Evans Trio in 1961 at the Village Vanguard, then with Herbie Hancock’s music throughout the 1960s, concluding with the jazz fusion of Chick Corea’s first Return to Forever group. The Brotherhood Project is a program of original songs and stories created by brothers and Twin Cities artists Ryan and Jamie Marshall. The project takes an intimate look at what it means to be a brother: providing a shoulder to lean on, reminiscing on childhood memories, dealing with loss in the family, and more.

Ryan Marshall is a Minneapolis singer-songwriter and a regular featured artist at the Riverview Cafe Songwriter Showcase and open mics around the Twin Cities. His younger brother, Jamie, received a degree in vocal music from St. Olaf College, and has since performed nationally and internationally with professional choirs from the Twin Cities. They are joined for the Brotherhood Project by Blake Weimerskirch on drum and vocals, and Sean Gilbertson with spoken word.

Told from multiple character’s points of view, the songs on Running Blind focus both on one moment in time, and also take a wider lens to examine forces behind what makes a person come to such drastic actions, and how these decisions affect those around them – whether they realize it or not.

Each character delivers a new perspective of what drives them to make the choices that lead up to a dramatic conclusion. While the songs are fictional, Sam Cassidy can’t help but find pieces of himself in all the tracks. Lacey is a singer-songwriter based in the Twin Cities.

As a classically trained pianist and a homegrown church choir singer, Lacey used the skills she learned over the years to craft her own songs with driving melodies and a modern hint of soul. After playing in countless coffee shops, bars, restaurants, breweries, and sidewalks, Lacey independently released her solo live EP, "Will Play for Coffee" in April 2017. Eventually, she worked her way up to open for acts including Stephen Kellogg, Eric Hutchinson & the Believers, Rufus Wainwright, Mason Jennings, & Reina del Cid. As she built traction and a steady fanbase, Lacey received full Kickstarter support that allowed her to record her debut full-length album at Creation Audio in Minneapolis. In 2009, Ice Palace played nearly one hundred shows. The Minneapolis band lead byAdam Sorensen surged with snowballing momentum through three US tours supportingbands such as Cloud Cult, Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, and Say Hi. Theyrecorded a second Daytrotter session and attracted an ever-expanding local fan baseopening for nationally renowned artists such as Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Wheat, Mapsand Atlases, and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Their second album, WonderSubtly Crushing Us, was released on Cloud Cult’s Earthology label and received praise across the blogosphere by RCRD LBL, Magnet Magazine, Three Imaginary Girls, CityPages, and many others.

On the heels of this whirlwind year, Sorensen abruptly detoured from the road he’dbeen traveling with Ice Palace. He uprooted his family to live on the edge of a mile highnational forest in Prescott Arizona - two miles from their mailbox, with chickens, awindmill pumping their water and a view that went forever. After the continual flurry of line-up changes and hard traveling, the silence of the Arizona high desert felt like heaven.

Haunted Like Human is bringing a new roots voice to Nashville: two parts folk, one part Americana, and a dash of indie vibes. Classically trained guitarist Cody Clark has played everything from post-hardcore to jazz. Vocalist Dale Chapman grew up writing prose and poetry, and she brings her strong imagery and storytelling into her music. A combination of Northwestern grit and Southern charm, the two strive to create a unique and intimate listening experience.

Lee is a previous American Idol winner and grew his fan base from this, though has spent the last years really shedding the stigma of the show and becoming his own independent artist. Lee’s other break out moment came when The Walking Dead picked up his song The Blackbird Song which resulted in over 10 million Youtube views collectively and 5 million Spotify plays. His song “Don’t Be Afraid” has been used for 2 yrs for the Blue Cross Shield campaign song and NASCAR commercials picked up “The Ride” Lee has been touring and supporting, touring and headlining and making a solid press dent too.

Americana singer/songwriter, Vicky Emerson, has been heralded by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and No Depression for her gorgeous, dusky voice and songwriting chops on previous releases but her new album, Steady Heart, which she self-produced, has firmly established her as an essential, strong female voice in Americana music. Emerson tours nationally and has opened for Gregory Alan Isakov, Malcomb Holcombe as a solo artist and Emmylou Harris as The Home Fires. She was raised in rural Wisconsin, has lived in New York City and San Francisco before relocating back to her roots in Minneapolis with her husband to raise her children.

Hi, I’m Dan. I’m a whiskey & beer drinking, fishing & hunting loving, motorcycle riding, quality food eating, hippie sympathizing, people loving, husband & father who lives in Minneapolis and shares a life with my amazing wife and adorable son. I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, MI, and moved to Minneapolis when I was 18 to study music, and I stayed because I’m one of those crazy people that enjoys the snow and cold weather. Music is my trade & performing it for people is my passion. When I’m not in my studio writing songs and cutting records, or on the road playing shows, I’m usually tending to our backyard chickens, eating fresh veggies from my wife’s huge garden, or out doing one of my many outdoor hobbies.

Wilkinson James was born in 2008 when Liz Wilkinson and AJ Scheiber met up and merged their singing and songwriting into a musical partnership that one fan described as "the bastard offspring of June Carter Cash and Townes Van Zandt." Their first (self-titled) album, released in 2014, showed their love of folk, honky-tonk, and country blues; their 2016 follow-up, Abandon, added touches of jazz, torch, and swing to their folk / honky-tonk base, blending dobro, fiddle, and saxophone with Liz and AJ’s tightly knit harmonies and classic-yet-fresh original tunes. Their Aster performance will feature songs old and new in duo, trio, and full-band formats, making for a lively, varied, and joyful night of music.

David moved across the alley from Karl. Steve bumped into David at a bar. David took a job at Dan M’s company (former Mel). Dan M. had a cousin Brian (former Mel). Brian had been in another band with Jeff. Jeff played on and off with current Dan A. And simple as that… The Melvilles. We all write and arrange songs together. The result is a friendly mongrel with a twangy, funky, folkish, bluesy, jangly, rock & roll bark.

Eric Olson, nicknamed "Oly," grew up in a small town on the St. Croix River (Stillwater) just outside Minneapolis, MN. Oly started playing drums at age 11, which is apparent in his rhythmic guitar playing. Oly began his professional singer/songwriter career in Colorado, where he founded the band Tunnel 6 in 1995. Touring successfully throughout CO, the band released its first album, "Tunnel 6," in 1997. In 2002 Oly released a solo acoustic album, "Holly Would," with producer(friend) Brad Witham. In 2004, Tunnel 6 was replaced by Oly's next project, Stereomaid, again fronted by Oly and featuring his original songs and unique blend of rock, folk and punk. In 2008, Stereomaid released "The Little Things that Come Between Us," produced by Greg McRae (Rose Hill Drive, Flobots). Notable shows included the Roxy in Hollywood, supporting Porcupine Tree at the Fox Theater in Boulder and helping causes important to Oly with a number of benefit shows. Oly also co-founded and fronted a popular 80’s tribute band, Huge in Germany, from 2004-2009, which opened for Jefferson Starship and Country Joe McDonald.

Frequency Collisions is a one man performing and recording project that mixes multiple genres and sounds to create heady, textured, and sonically rich music. Ryan Rud is the head and heart behind Frequency Collisions. A veteran of the Twin Cities music scene he has shared the stage with many national acts in some of America's most iconic venues. He has had music featured in popular television shows like "Criminal Minds” among others.

Fur Coats and Bar Fights is a local band out of Minneapolis MN. They strive to bring to the table the right combination of notes, melodies, and flannel shirts that will keep you lunging towards the nearest dance floor. Fur Coats and Bar Fights also want to bring something new to the music industry - something that will keep people guessing.

Jonathan Edwards, aka Wayward, is an Indie Pop Singer-Songwriter from Minneapolis, MN. With a love for writing and sharing songs, Wayward is touring the Midwest in anticipation of his debut full-length album "Happiness".

Wayward's sound has often been compared to Ed Sheeran, Jason Mraz, The Lumineers, Jon Bellion, and even Imagine Dragons. With lyrics and music spanning ages and genres, there will be something for everybody!

Laura Hugo is originally from the Navajo Nation but has been calling the Twin Cities her home for the last 7 years. She’ll make you feel the feels with her melodic and catchy tunes about heartbreak. You’ll probably find her frequenting open mics, playing at various Minneapolis music venues and watching others play shows at least 4 days a week.

Per Wikipedia, jazz rock fusion is defined as a “musical genre that developed in the late 1960s from a mixture of elements of jazz such as its focus on improvisation with the rhythms and grooves of funk and R&B and the beats and heavily amplified electric instruments and electronic effects of rock”. One highlight of last weeks Art A Whirl was a performance at FOCI Glass by the band Tortuga!. Tortuga! has a singular and inspiring take on the Jazz Rock genre.

Aaron Biggar’s drumming provides foundation and color. His rhythms can be both surprisingly powerful and subtle. With Shawn Maroney on Bass, these two complete an exceptional rhythm section. Maroney contributes to the ground on which this group builds their musical structures, while adding flourish and interest throughout the set. Cory Jesok, on guitar, provides texture, rhythm, and blazing solo work, creating space or density just when it is required. P.J. Tracy, on piano, asserts melodies, harmonic support and furious solos of his own, traveling through multiple styles within the same tune.

Having steeped themselves like an old bag of tea in the recordings of Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music-Luke Callen & Wolf van Elfmand bring the old weird America into the new absurd America. Branding their style as New Folk/Strange Country-the duo uses old tropes to formulate new ideas around Americana music-an oft exclusive realm. Having first met in the dusty boom town of Fort Collins, Colorado-the two formed the hard driving folk outfit Von Stomper-and promptly got on the road. With the band, and as solo musicians they have toured both coasts, the American West, South and Heartland. Now as a duo-part Mississippi John Hurt, Roger Miller, and Blaze Foley-Luke and Wolf have crafted a sound that is both reminiscent of the past, resentful of it's pain, and reluctant towards it's future.

Family Three are just two guys and one gal who love music. They would describe their sound as "Blindie-Soulk" - Blues, Indie, Soul and Folk. They have been playing some form of music since they were kids, but it wasn't until recently that they decided to take the next step, and are on the journey of finding out what it means to put the passion of music in the front seat.

Katy has been described as ”One of the Twin Cities’ most beloved folky singer/songwriters.” Star Tribune.

She was born and raised in London, UK, but in the past dozen or so years has established herself as one of the busiest musicians in Minnesota. This ukulele Songbird combines melodic pop/folk songwriting with her twangy Americana band. Katy has just returned from her second UK tour and is making her third album right now. She uses her love of singing and playing ukulele, to make musical and charitable connections far and wide.

The Fourth Wall is an up and coming Jazz Quartet from Saint Paul, MN consisting of drummer Nathanael Smith, bassist James Towns, and pianist/saxophonist Rhys Leroux, along with a rotation of different musicians. David Harland has felt the pull of music all of his life. His music has been described as innovative, introspective and expressive. David is a fingerstyle guitarist and singer/songwriter in the tradition of great innovators like Michael Hedges, Nick Drake, David Wilcox and Billy McLaughlin.

Emily Haavik & the 35s play harmony-driven, string-filled alt-country up and down the greatest of interstates: the I-35. They just released their debut full-length album, Ease Back, in December of 2018.

Robert Wilkinson, founding member and singer/songwriter for seminal band Flamingo, that later went on to morph into Flamin’ Oh’s.

Robert is featured in the recently released documentary “Jay’s Longhorn”. Dynamic, passionate, and authentic, Robert will be performing songs from his long and deep catalogue with Flamin’ Oh’s, The Snaps, and his solo album, “Days Like Glass”.

In 2009, Ice Palace played nearly one hundred shows. The Minneapolis band lead byAdam Sorensen surged with snowballing momentum through three US tours supportingbands such as Cloud Cult, Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, and Say Hi. Theyrecorded a second Daytrotter session and attracted an ever-expanding local fan baseopening for nationally renowned artists such as Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Wheat, Mapsand Atlases, and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Their second album, WonderSubtly Crushing Us, was released on Cloud Cult’s Earthology label and received praise across the blogosphere by RCRD LBL, Magnet Magazine, Three Imaginary Girls, CityPages, and many others.

On the heels of this whirlwind year, Sorensen abruptly detoured from the road he’dbeen traveling with Ice Palace. He uprooted his family to live on the edge of a mile highnational forest in Prescott Arizona - two miles from their mailbox, with chickens, awindmill pumping their water and a view that went forever. After the continual flurry of line-up changes and hard traveling, the silence of the Arizona high desert felt like heaven.

Elska is the narrator of cinematic lullabies and creation of Brooklyn-based composer Laura Boland. She represents love, optimism, imagination, conflict & awareness.


Laura’s been collaborating for years in Minneapolis and New York; writing and performing vocal melodies for original projects; most notably the gypsy-noir quintet Bella Koshka and the ambient duo Stehla where she began creating post-apocalyptic soundscapes to accompany their haunting acoustics. Her diverse training inspired these solo works which merge classical elements with sculptural designs.

Jim Gruidl is a stalwart member of the Minneapolis music scene. From his early days as a member of The Bloods (Gark Records) he has carved out a path as a songwriter, and a guitar player. “I’ve been really lucky over the years to be able to team up with great local musicians and create art, whether it was playing my stuff or just playing guitar on their projects. The Buddy System is just the next logical step in that progression.”

Kraig Jarret Johnson is an American songwriter, singer, guitarist and recording artist from Minneapolis who has performed and recorded with Run Westy Run, The Jayhawks, Golden Smog, Iffy, Joseph Arthur & The Lonely Astronauts, members of R.E.M., Ray Davies of The Kinks and his own band, Kraig Jarret Johnson & The Program.

Named a top 100 SXSW Artist by NPR Music in 2018, Twin Cities based Collapsing Stars have been steadily making a name for themselves throughout the American west. Blending folk, blues and Americana sounds with a hint of modernity, comparisons range from Iron & Wine and the Lumineers, to the Black Keys and Ben Harper. In the last few years they've earned producer credits on a record for Rhymesayers Entertainment (Atmosphere, Brother Ali, deM atlaS), played a showcase at the renowned Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, and in 2016 performed for over 120K people at Red Bull Crashed Ice. Their debut record titled '2012' has received noteworthy accolades including praise from Dan Wilson, the Semisonic frontman who has co-written songs for the Dixie Chicks, John Legend, Weezer, and Adele's 2011 hit Someone Like You. Mixing up an unlikely concoction of vintage rock & roll and old country, Coal Diamond is, depending on when you ask, either the stage name for songwriter and vocalist Ryan Otte or the collective handle for Otte and his group. Americana singer/songwriter, Vicky Emerson, has been heralded by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and No Depression for her gorgeous, dusky voice and songwriting chops on previous releases but her new album, Steady Heart, which she self-produced, has firmly established her as an essential, strong female voice in Americana music. Emerson tours nationally and has opened for Gregory Alan Isakov, Malcomb Holcombe as a solo artist and Emmylou Harris as The Home Fires. She was raised in rural Wisconsin, has lived in New York City and San Francisco before relocating back to her roots in Minneapolis with her husband to raise her children.

In 2016, Steve Dupuis (guitar in The Rakes, The Blue Mollies, Trompe Le Monde, etc...) found himself writing a bunch of songs inspired in equal parts by the insane political environment, personal stories and just plain rock & roll, Steve was left with a whole lotta demos and in need of a band. Steve approached Mark Devaraj (High On Stress, The Red Flags, WRRC Mpls, etc...) to play drums, Emily Dupuis (The Blue Mollies, The Bottlehouse) to play keys and sing back up, Jon Sawyer (The Rakes, Rob Stealcheat, etc...) for bass and Grant Eull (Detroit, Manplanet, Frizzle Fry, etc...) to round up the lineup on guitar. After finding nobody who would be willing to sing, Dupuis decided reluctantly to just do it himself. Now, with a few months of practice and a few songs recorded as a band, TThe Heavy Sixers are ready to bring these songs to the people. Influences can be heard in varying degrees from some classic rock & roll sounds of the 60s and 70s to the college rock of the 80s and 90s.

Jeff Arundel has mounted stages both tiny and large for forty years, singing wistful songs of romance, and funky stuff that belies his true wish to be Bill Withers. He has released seven records of (largely) original music, and in 2019 will release an eighth, called “Now We Go”. Jeff has won awards, been featured on various compilations, opened for Big Artists, and has traveled the world as a singer-songwriter, as a producer, and as a music director. He also founded the ground-breaking Lifestyle music label “Lifescapes” and was a co-founder of Compass Entertainment, at one time the Midwest’s largest independent concert promoter. Jeff performs with his band “The Hammsmen”, sometimes called “the most sensitive band in North America”. He regularly plays the Midwest, often with his lifetime musical brother Billy McLaughlin. Bryan was born in Lawton/Fort Sill, (Comanche County) Oklahoma into a musical family. Growing up he listened to all kinds of music. His parents played in cover bands and thanks to his father, he learned to play drums while he was still very young. Drums came natural to him and he became so good at it that his parents frequently invited him to play with them. Since their bands played all different styles of music, White feels it gave him a great perspective and helped to make him the diverse artist that he is today. "Although country music has my heart, I still love and respect all kinds of musical expression."

Laurent started playing clubs in Minneapolis while still in high school, signing his first record deal when he was twenty-two. His fifth album "Love Don't Let Me Down" was produced in Nashville, where Laurent is a full time songwriter.

"Nashville has been great. I've been able to work with songwriters who's names I used to read in the liner notes of my favorite records, grammy winners, and major label recording artists."

About ten years ago Tim and Phil began to work up duets and perform together. They’ve built an exciting and wide-ranging repertoire drawing from American folk/blues/early jazz roots, some brilliant forays into “world” music, and a few well-chosen pop obscurities. The two have honed a dynamic concert format that showcases each guitarist’s solo selections and culminates in the full glory of two world-class fingerpickers going at it together.

Per Wikipedia, jazz rock fusion is defined as a “musical genre that developed in the late 1960s from a mixture of elements of jazz such as its focus on improvisation with the rhythms and grooves of funk and R&B and the beats and heavily amplified electric instruments and electronic effects of rock”. Dreamboat is a Minneapolis based band formed in May 2017 comprised of four members bringing their eclectic background to solidify their sound. Dylan Hicks is a musician and writer. His acclaimed fifth album, Ad Out, was produced by John Munson and features eleven tuneful, character-driven songs smartly arranged around Hicks’s piano. Sonja Midtune is an artist and songwriter from Minnesota located in Los Angeles. Her music career started very young; traveling the world at 8 for musical theatre, and singing in bands and musical theatre at Minnetonka High School. Sonja got her BA in Music Theory and Composition at St. Olaf College in MN.

Her original music is in the songwriter-pop category, writing all the music on her own. She is known for her poignant lyrics and storytelling, with a back-to-basics style, nodding to the modern pop song but incorporating her composition skills. She's played all over the Los Angeles area including venues such as the main stage at the House of Blues in Hollywood, a 9-month residency Bar Lubitsch, Vibrato Jazz Club in Beverly Hills, The Viper Room, The Bootleg, and the Mint.

Mary Bue is an indie musician based in Minneapolis. A prolific songwriter with 7 albums under her belt, Mary’s music touches upon archetypal themes of the human condition: love, loss, triumph, dreams, and the natural world. A longtime student of yoga and psychology since her early teens, Mary weaves sacred subject matter into her songs with inquiries into the spirit, the seeking of deeper levels of consciousness, and deep concern for the environment all mixed into her sometimes crass, real-world hue.

White Sweater is a folk / rock / pop group that plays the original songs of its own members’ previous groups, along with a few carefully selected covers, as well as their own new original material. Lead singer Aaron Seymour began his Minneapolis rock career as a teenager in the 1980's. He has co-written, sung lead vocals and released albums as front-man for the Widgets in the 1980's, the Delilahs in the 1990's, X Ray Hip in the 2000's, and Petty Demons earlier in this current decade. Guitarist / singer Craig Teiken has been the main singer / songwriter for the Wood in the 1990's and Rob the Carpenter in the 2000s'. He has been and/or continues to be a writer, guitarist, bass player and singer in X Ray Hip, Dave Rave and the Governors, Edie Rae and the Blaze Kings (and offshoot Edie Rae and Side Salad), and many other groups. He is currently producing a solo record of his own material in Minneapolis. Guitarist / singer Edie Rae has been a singer for local heroes Lolo’s Ghost. She has so far recorded and released two albums of her own original material in her group Edie Rae and the Blaze Kings. She also lends her talents to various bands and musical projects around the Twin Cities. Bassist/singer Tim Francis has been a member of the Fontanas, Fire Sermon, the Delilahs and Petty Demons. He is currently working on his debut album of original material with producer Rob Genadek in Minneapolis. Percussionist/singer Joseph Pettini performed in several bands in his hometown in the Bay Area of California. Since arriving in Minneapolis in the early 90's, he’s played a prominent role in numerous projects, including Tambuca, Big Red Ball, Electric Warrior, and First Avenue’s annual “Rock for Pussy” Bowie tribute. He currently leads his new band, Hurdy Gurdy, featuring several notable Minneapolis musicians, including guitarist Steve Brantseg (Suburbs, Phones, etc.) Drummer Clay Swanson is one of the most versatile and respected drummers in the Twin Cities. Swanson has been a member of many band, including the Widgets and Petty Demons. He is currently drummer with Edie Rae and the Blaze Kings, Earthquakes and Heartaches, and Hurdy Gurdy. In addition to those bands and White Sweater, Clay often lends his talents to numerous other projects in and around town.

Patty and The Buttons preach the gospel of hot rhythm and happy feet. The band is similar to what you would find in a dance hall, cafe or nightclub anywhere around the world between 1920-1940. Despite being an ensemble firmly rooted in tradition, the band presents their music without being shackled to history. They play their own compositions as well as takes on music of the era. Patty’s eclectic taste gives the band diverse influences including New Orleans Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Gypsy Melodies, Ragtime Piano Blues, Jug Music and 1930′s Popular Song. The core instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar and bass is light and swift, but also melancholic and lush when it needs to be. Patty , mostly known as an accordionist doubles as the bands vocalist. His voice is inspired most by the old time hollers and croons from the dawn of recording once described as “Tom Waits meets Rudy Vallee.” More than anything, The Buttons is a group that is always enjoying themselves… Which seems to give audiences permission to do the same.

Billy Johnson is a singer/songwriter from Minneapolis. Billy was the lead singer of The Hillcats, and is the lead singer of Billy Johnson’s Roadshow. He also has an acoustic duo called B-TEAM with George McKelvey. Billy has recorded 10 CDs. He strums a Gibson guitar with soul, and has a great vocal range.
