Matty O’Reilly + Big Lake $7
Saturday, June 3, 2023 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Matty O’Reilly is a Minnesota native, a little older than your brother but probably younger than your dad. The songwriter and front-man for local Minneapolis bands Coolidge, Old Grey Whistle Test, The Home Wreckers and the Molly O’Reilly Orchestra, was at one point dubbed “the consummate opening act” by Chris Reimenschnieder of the Star Tribune. His original song “Bar Whiskey” was included in infamous radio DJ Jack Sparks Top 5 Break Up Songs of all time, 2nd behind Dead Flowers by The Rolling Stones.
His music floats in and out of alt-country and folk, but gently blended with layers reminiscent of the sweet winds whispering across the Americana plains and a honky tonk roadhouse jukebox.

Minneapolis based band Big Lake debuted in 2014 with a self titled LP of songs that were as ear-wormy as they were well-crafted. Lush vocal harmonies, intricate guitar work and a driving rhythm section helped them arrive at a unique blend of indie rock and folk. This self titled record saw support from City Pages and had regular airplay from St. Paul/Minneapolis MPR station 89.3 The Current.
The forthcoming Big Lake record takes a turn toward their country roots. Band members Eric Carlson and Patrick Mazurek honed their long shared interest in classic country and folk music to create a collection of songs that is deceptively simple and rewarding. The duo’s new sound of pared down americana is a natural fit for the rustic feeling of their voices harmonizing together. And while there’s plenty of stylistic nods to Harvest-era Neil Young or Son Volt’s Trace, the duo finds a sound that still feels singular and modern.
