Hyooman sprouted from the bedroom of songwriter Leng Moua, fueled by his desire to reconnect with his inner fan and love for music. Soon the band was formed, joined by Elise Bremer (keys and vocals), McCoy Seitz (drums and vocals), Dillon Marchus (bass), and Victor Pokorny (guitar and vocals). Hyooman traverses the terrain between the lo-fi bedroom pop of Alex G and the alternative bands of the 90s/early 2000s – while they lyrically explore the themes of introspection, social media, and existential dread. In May 2021 the band released their first single, “Half Brain,” and followed up with the release of their debut album Pilot in June 2022.

Steve Roehm and Ben Glaros dove into the world of music early on; jamming, learning and experimenting together at each other's houses and in the band room at Mounds View High School. They rocked many a school cafeteria, church basement and talent show before graduating to higher education and higher profile gigs. Nowadays you are likely to have seen Steve perform his magic on vibraphone with jazzy pop supergroup The New Standards, and Ben has emerged as an esteemed singer/songwriter and has contributed his formidable guitar skills to countless projects over the years.

The Way Back Yard Boys sing three part harmony fiddle music. Some folk, bluegrass, Americana standards and originals. We got our name from playing backyard shows, when those were the only shows you could play.

Californian turned Minnesotan, Cassandra Cole is a songwriter, visual artist, actor, athlete, and mother. Cole specializes in songwriting that showcases life’s rich tapestry - and refines each thread, creating a canvas that gives us a look into her soul. In her latest release, Steps, she writes about the human experience.

Steps dives into some heavy subjects in Cole’s life - including years of depression, anxiety, and heartache. Inspired by her favorite songwriters, such as Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, and Ella Fitzgerald, she uses her songwriting to tell stories. The album ebbs and flows - the last track, “Mornings High”, is about taking emotional, mental, and physical steps out of the darkness.

Darren is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, engineer, teacher, and producer. Although he grew up in a small town in Western South Dakota, Darren cut his musical teeth in Minneapolis. A fixture on the scene there for two decades, Darren founded two critically-acclaimed bands (Kid Dakota and the Olympic Hopefuls), released nine albums, and won three Minnesota Music Awards including “Artist of the Year.” He toured extensively in the United States and Europe, sharing stages with rock and roll icons such as Soul Asylum and the Violent Femmes as well as indie rock stalwarts like LOW and Black Moth Super Rainbow. He owns a recording studio in NE Minneapolis - Homesteader Studio - and has two Bedlington Terriers - Dante and Diva.

Paul Odegaard and Katy Vernon have been collaborating for more than ten years on three records, and are continuing to experiment and grow their creative partnership.

Katy was born and raised in London, UK but in the past dozen or so years has established herself as one of the busiest musicians in Minnesota. Combining melodic pop/folk songwriting with her twangy Americana band. She has won the Eric Stokes songwriting award and was also a finalist in the New song contest at Kerrville Folk Festival.She has appeared at Festivals in the Midwest and UK, such as the Ukulele Festival of Great Britain, The Grand Northern Ukulele Festival, Taste Of Minnesota, Stars of the North, Big Turn Fest, and Hazelfest. Her newest record ‘Suit Of hearts’ was named a top ten record of the year by the Star Tribune, as well as City Pages, and Melodic Playlist Twin Cities. Uke Magazine together with Uke Planet website call ‘Suit Of hearts’ The best ukulele album of the year. Most recently Katy was named the best Acoustic performer of 2020 by City Pages.

Paul is an in-demand studio musician and frequent collaborator with some of your favorite songwriters (Kevin Odegard, John Swardson, Dan Israel, etc.), as well as big bands, and other experiments and improvisations.

Iowa-raised, Minneapolis-based Ben Cook-Feltz is a singer, songwriter, drummer and self-taught pianist. Combining observational, sometimes quirky lyrics with melodies that hearken back to the classic sounds of the 60′s and 70′s, he has been entertaining audiences throughout the Midwest as a dynamic performer, whether playing solo, with his crackerjack band, or backing up some of the finest regional talent. His most recent single, "Free Jazz Refugees," was released in April 2022.

Billy Johnson is a singer/songwriter from Minneapolis. Billy was the lead singer of The Hillcats, and is the lead singer of Billy Johnson’s Roadshow. Black Dog High features George McKelvey, Mark Mraz, and Scott Best. Billy also has an acoustic duo called B-TEAM with George McKelvey. Billy has recorded 10 CDs. He strums a Gibson guitar with soul, and has a great vocal range.

Years ago, John Magnuson was in a Minneapolis band called the Carpetbaggers. John played rhythm guitar and wrote/sang many of the band's songs. The Carpetbaggers enjoyed some notoriety in the mid-to-late 90s when the band did three tours with Son Volt and shared the stage with such notables as Los Lobos, Alison Krauss, the Jayhawks, Dick Dale, and Paul Westerberg. In November of 2020, John released a record called Barely Noticeable. Half of the album is Indie/Folk-Rock-ish, and the other half is pretty much the same, except with a little more twang. When performing, John primarily plays his original material, with a few covers mixed in for good measure.

Spending his early career in Austin, Texas living and working alongside legendary Texas song writer Joe Ely, Chandler began to see his window into how he could add to the American Songbook. Gaining the bruises and knowledge of life on the road, he has once again journeyed back to his home on the water to hone his true voice.

It started back in 2008, when Liz Wilkinson moved to Minneapolis from North Carolina and met up with local singer-songwriter AJ Scheiber. They found out quickly that their voices and musical interests blended and began performing together as Wilkinson James. An early fan described their music as "the bastard offspring of Townes Van Zandt and June Carter Cash."

In 2014 Wilkinson James released a well-received eponymous first record, backed by the cream of the Twin Cities' session players. In the process of promoting the album, the duo evolved into a not-so-little band that included saxophone, fiddle, and pedal steel in addition to Liz and AJ's ever-present harmony singing and lead trade-offs. A second record, Abandon (2016) featured core members of the regular performing band, and extended their repertoire of original tunes into moody jazz, swing, and American Songbook styles.

The Maeflies return to The Aster for their special Fall show. The Maeflies will bring their best original and cover songs with a full fleet of stringed instruments and rich harmonies.

The Maeflies, Minnesota's Americana-Country-Rock Ensemble, have been playing their trademark sound for over 18 years. They deliver rich signature harmonies, hot guitars and songs that tell a story. The Maeflies know their way around any iteration of guitar, including pedal steel, mandolin and banjo. All the Maeflies can sing and pass around the lead vocal. Mae fronts the band; and you will discover why.

David Harland has felt the pull of music all of his life. His music has been described as innovative, introspective and expressive. David is a fingerstyle guitarist and singer/songwriter in the tradition of great innovators like Michael Hedges, Nick Drake, David Wilcox and Billy McLaughlin.

Remember sitting in your living room as kid? The shag carpet tickling the back of your legs. You were chewing on your Marathon bar and sipping from a can of Rondo Soda while watching your favorite TV show…was it CHiPs or S.W.A.T.?… Doesn’t matter they both were great and so was the music in them. The Neighborhood Trio might just take you back to those times with their groovy 70’s theme song inspired tunes, but sorry Rondo is long gone, but I’m sure you will find something from the bar to crush your thirst!

Zach Pietrini’s Midwestern, indie americana songwriting aesthetic is the sonic embodiment of a well-worn denim jacket. At the forefront of the Americana resurgence, Pietrini—lead vocalist and guitarist for his namesake band—takes an everyman’s approach to the genre with a knack for honest storytelling and a wistfulness that comes across in both the music and lyrics. The band takes its cues from Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and David Ramirez, reinterpreting and rejuvenating American roots styles through a contemporary lens. Pietrini’s songs “situate him at the confluence of all that an urban Millennial audience finds relatable” (Milwaukee Magazine), performing old-soul themes of ennui, regret, disappointment, and nostalgia with a modern twist.

Pietrini came up on the Chicago music scene before moving to Milwaukee, where he honed his signature “foot-tapping and pensive steel-guitar-driven” style (Milwaukee Magazine), making regular appearances at Summerfest, Mile of Music, Bastille Days, and other festivals. The band has also toured prolifically throughout the United States, including opening for Huey Lewis and the News (5,000 in attendance) and playing SXSW, returning home often to play at local venues like Anodyne and Colectivo Backroom as well as house shows in living rooms around Milwaukee.

Nina Luna is, simply put, a force of nature. Born into the mystery of the hills of New England, raised on the spirit and the myths of the North Country in Minneapolis, she cut her teeth on legends of artists come before and forged her own path through the bright lights and dive bars of New York and Los Angeles. The unique influence of her bond with these places comes through in Luna’s music - a natural mysticism and sacred sensuality combine with a lust for life and a fiery edge into a shape-shifting alt-pop sound. Her lyrics are honest and vulnerable while her production is often cinematic and otherworldly, her voice at once ethereal and powerful. Like the elements, Nina Luna is hard to pin down and not so easy to define yet that captivating allusiveness is exactly what keeps the listener coming back for more.

A fixture on the scene there for two decades, Darren founded two critically-acclaimed bands (Kid Dakota and the Olympic Hopefuls), released nine albums, and won three Minnesota Music Awards including “Artist of the Year.” He toured extensively in the United States and Europe, sharing stages with rock and roll icons such as Soul Asylum and the Violent Femmes as well as indie rock stalwarts like LOW and Black Moth Super Rainbow. He owns a recording studio in NE Minneapolis - Homesteader Studio - and has two Bedlington Terriers - Dante and Diva.

HebbaJebba was born out of Minneapolis singer-songwriter Ted Hajnasiewicz's desire to put his songs into more of a rock and roll band format. Rounded out with dear old friends and local rock veterans Paul Gordhamer (drums), Mark Ganje (guitars) and Tom Carlon (bass), HebbaJebba is - well, slightly easier to pronounce than "Hajnasiewicz", no? Come celebrate the 1 year anniversary of their debut album.

For as long as he can remember, Ryan Montbleau’s been a seeker. From the jungles of Peru to the volcanoes of Hawaii, from the beaches of Costa Rica to the streets of Brooklyn, from the backseat of a 16-passenger van to backstage at Carnegie Hall, the acclaimed singer/songwriter has spent much of his life crisscrossing the globe on a perpetual search for meaning, purpose, and understanding. It’s a quest that’s guided him both personally and professionally over the years, one that’s come to define not only his music, but his very sense of self. And yet, listening to Montbleau’s ambitious new multi-part album, Wood, Fire, Water, and Air, there is a profound sense of satisfaction in sitting still, a recognition that perhaps all those spiritual treasures he’s been chasing for so long were closer than he thought.

“My whole adult life has been this journey of trying to figure out where home is,” Montbleau reflects. “I think I’ve finally found it.”

Castle Theater is the music of songwriter and home recordist Tyler Tholl. Previously, Tholl played in the horn-heavy synth-pop group Maple & Beech, made experimental music out of nature sounds, and produced records for friends’ bands. His new album as Castle Theater, Ostrich, is a collection of subdued, tuneful, mid-fi folk and pop. Tholl will celebrate its release at the Aster Cafe with special guests Nicole Wilder and Brian Just.

Billy Johnson is a singer/songwriter from Minneapolis. Billy was the lead singer of The Hillcats, and is the lead singer of Billy Johnson’s Roadshow. He also has an acoustic duo called B-TEAM with George McKelvey. Billy has recorded 10 CDs. He strums a Gibson guitar with soul, and has a great vocal range.

Often known for her way of entwining mesmerizing vocal passages with a guitar groove far advanced beyond your average singer/songwriter, Skarlett Woods brings folk and West Coast Jazz to the same dinner table.

Entwining Swing and Jazz into folk-themed stories of love, she has a stage presence that demands the attention of a room. Taking her listeners on up-beat rhythmic rides over heart- swelling arrangements of originals and covers, Skarlett has simply become more comfortable showing herself in the lights. She took a spot light in the 2022 Dylan Fest Songwriters Contest as one of the winning songs that evening. She is currently in the studio with Producer Kevin Bowe, who has worked with- Jonny Lang, Etta James and Joe Cocker, to release a single from that winning song, “Close To You” before the year is out. And gearing up for a Sophomore album release in the Spring of 2023.

Once a year, Sarah Morris gets out her silver bells, the tinsel, the holly, and the jolly; inviting her friends to gather for a sparkling night of holiday music. Growing up in a house where Brenda Lee, Johnny Mathis, and Bing Crosby crooned through the family speakers all season long, Sarah comes by her deep love for Christmas songs honestly. With her 16th annual Holiday Show, Sarah and her band, ‘The Sometimes Elves’, are also celebrating putting that love for holiday music into a new little album. ‘merry little, light’ is a cozy, intimate recording of 4 classics and one original tune, meant to encourage cuddling under blankets, or contemplation underneath the glittering winter stars. Join Sarah & the Sometimes Elves in the warm glow of Aster Café for a joyful evening filled with festive favorites, love, laughter, and light.

In 1977, the band Flamingo was formed by Robert Wilkinson (guitars, vocals), Johnny Rey (guitars), Jody Ray (bass guitar), Bob Meide (percussion) and Joseph Behrend (keyboards and vocals). The release of “Flamingo” in 1978, recorded at Tracks on Fifth, included the songs “Smart Girl,” “We Do What We Like,” “One More Night” and one of the band’s most popular and enduring songs, “I Remember Romance.” Critics took note of Flamingo and the EP with descriptive praise: “Hard edged Stones-like rock’n’roll. East Coast street anthems coupled with Midwestern optimism and enthusiasm.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

Over the next 40 years, Flamin' Oh's (as they were renamed soon after their first release) would continue to evolve, perform, and record – with Wilkinson as the enduring frontman. They were a pioneer in the early 1980s’ developing music video industry and toured nationally and internationally throughout the 1980s.

Northern MN-based folk artist Kelley Smith is new to the scene, and is releasing her first album - Moon Child - on November 11, '22. Raised in the woods by musicians, Smith had always been inclined towards music. However, as a mom of four, the years rolled by wherein all her creative energies “…went into puppet shows, being a kitchen witch, and whatnot.” The ups and downs of love, parenting, mental health, and a global pandemic were catalysts that eventually led her back to music. Smith was in her mid 30's when she began teaching herself guitar late at night. Later, pandemic lockdowns provided her with extra time and space to write her first songs.

Smith draws from a wide array of influences, but especially old-timey roots musicians like Doc Watson, Iris Dement, The Carter Family, and Gillian Welch. An emotive performer, she provides “a safe space for folks to feel their feelings.”

This is Sophie and Steven's musical debut together! Drawn to jazz at a young age, Sophie Javna has performed with bands throughout Oregon and Colorado. She offers an intimate and soulful musical experience through interpretation of a wide range of standards, blues, and R&B.

Steven Hobert is a pianist, composer, and explorer. His transportive sound spans a surprising breadth of texture and emotion incorporating musical vocabulary and spirit from America, West Africa, and the Flamenco tradition. Steven's projects include Oudyano with renowned Syrian oud player Issam Rafea, the world beat-driven ensemble FireFlyForest, and the contemporary jazz group Wall Smashers.

Since forming in northeast Minneapolis in 2006, The High 48s have been making music that combines the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude.

They’re a band with one foot in tradition and the other in the world of music today, and one of the very few who can find an overlooked bluegrass classic in a song by M. Ward or the Clash then throw down hard on a standard by Bill Monroe.

The High 48s are also a band of songwriters. Here, too, they take a modern approach, heeding the well-worn advice to writers: write what you know. Their songs ring true to their lives as northern city-folk rather than an imagined “sweet, sunny south” of coal mines and dark hollers.

Alternative Americana rock band, The Changeups, are based in Minneapolis fronted by vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Alicia Kay. The lineup consists of co-founder and guitarist/songwriter Jimmy Baker (Crazed Individuals, Eddie Mac), as well as drummer Aaron Rosener (Matt Jennings, Unclick), and bassist Jeff Ellington (The Fake McCoys, The Roosevelts). Their various backgrounds as rock, country, R&B, folk and punk musicians make for a distinct sound changing the song style throughout a performance. Alicia’s emotional lyrics and twangy heartfelt singing trickled in with Jimmy’s fun pop songs charm any audience and is loved by fans of Neko Case, Lucinda Williams and Lydia Loveless.

Paperbacks is an indie pop band based in southern Minnesota, helmed by Minneapolis tunesmith Sven-Erik Olsen (vocals & guitar), whose tuneful, dreamy Beatlesque pop gems are brought to life by keyboardist Julie Sweet, bassist Michael Brewer Carina, and drummer Dan Greenwood. They are currently touring the midwestern United States and will release their debut album in 2023.

Playing experimental indie folk enlivened by obscure arrangements and poetic lyrics, St. Anthony Mann is the stage name of Adam Bjoraker. What felt much like a personal debut after self-producing an EP and an LP, LISSI came forth like a marvelous wound amidst the early pandemic. JT Bates (Big Red Machine, Taylor Swift) co-produced the record and features, as does Michael Lewis (Bon Iver), Pieta Brown, as well as bandmates Ben McKeown (drums), Matt Tessier (bass), DJ LaFonstee (guitar), all influencing and helping to give the band a signature sound.

Aaron Tinjum is a Minnesota-based songwriter.

He formed his folk rock project, Aaron Tinjum and the Tangents, while playing the many coffeehouses, dive bars, used clothing stores and furniture shops of the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin, Texas. In 2012, they released their debut Mirrors in the Dark and were honored by the Austin Mayor and City Council with their own official band holiday.

Since forming in 2006, The High 48s have been making music that combines the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude, original songs and a wide range of influences far beyond Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, and Flatt and Scruggs.

In a genre created and dominated by artists from the South, The High 48s were born and raised in the Upper Midwest. And in a music scene where playing standards is the norm, The High 48s are a band of songwriters who perform their own material in addition to the “festival favorites.”

Connections between partners, whether they be spiritual, romantic or creative can be the origin of true magic. The journey of Brianna and Kurt, and evolution of their creative collaboration, has yielded music that defines both of them through the vehicle of The Jorgensens. There is an honest authenticity of the repertoire they’ve created which is both timeless and classic. Their performances are genuine, soulful and relatable for many who will hear these songs. This kismet did not emerge overnight, but is the product of years of being in one another’s creative lives, collaboration, friendship, and inevitably falling in love.
