Cindy Lawson w/ Linnea’s Garden $12
Saturday, July 8, 2023 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Cindy Lawson began her rock and roll career in Minneapolis in 1985 with her all-female rock band, The Clams. Over the years, she has played in several bands in Minneapolis and New York City, but then took a break starting in the late 90’s. She returned in full force with a new band in 2021 and in 2022 released “New Tricks”, her first full length record in 25 years on Boston’s Rum Bar Records. New Tricks got airplay both nationally (on Little Steven’s Underground Garage and on Little Steven’s Coolest Songs in the World) and internationally, garnering rave reviews in publications across the globe. In April of 2023, she released a new single and video called “Don’t Come Crying To Me” that was immediately picked for Little Steven’s Coolest Songs in the World and is currently in rotation on Sirius XM. It’s also been chosen for The Racket’s Local Music Playlist for 2023. She plans to release another full length recording later this year.
She’s backed by longtime collaborator and inventive guitarist Jerry Lefkowitz (of The Young Nashvillians, Something Fierce, Whoops Kitty, and Fauna, among others), bassist and multi- instrumentalist Dave Randall, whose rock bonafides include The Spectors, The Boot R&B, The Silent Treatment, Kinda Kinky, and many more, and on the drums is Mark Devaraj, who’s kept the beat going in bands High on Stress, Whiskey Rock and Roll Club, The Heavy Sixers, as well as dozens of other Minneapolis bands.
Linnea’s Garden plays glam punk rock you can dance to. Imagine the angular guitars of Television, primal bass lines of The Clash, danceworthy grooves of Blondie, and otherworldly songwriting and stage show of David Bowie, fronted by a queer singer/songwriter/scientist. Loud, shiny and full of distortion: they do it cuz they like to do it. They say the things people are afraid to say.
Linnea (vocals/guitar) first met bandmates Hands (bass/vocals) and Ray (drums) when their previous bands PowerSlut and Corner Soul were competing finalists in Boston’s 40th Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble. Their debut EP “Nowhere Friday Nights,” released in March 2021, was born out of late night jam sessions that salvaged a pandemic summer. Drawing inspiration from ‘60s girl groups and ‘70s glam rock, the EP challenges listeners’ expectations with “consistently catchy and subversive takes on power pop and punk” (Allston Pudding).
In April 2022, Linnea’s Garden released their full-length album “Fashion Show” on Red on Red Records. It’s 13 “honest and electrifying” (Rock n’ Heavy) tracks of “disco dressed down in gutter glam (Boston Herald), a “classic in the making” (WoNoBlog) “just waiting to erupt on a dance floor” (If It’s Too Loud). The single “Cut & Paste” was one of Bill Kelly’s Personal Picks on Little Steven’s Coolest Songs in the World on SiriusXM, and Linnea’s Garden received Boston and New England Music Awards nominations for Punk Act of the Year in 2022.
Since their live debut in summer 2021, Linnea’s Garden has played over 50 shows along the East Coast, including dates with Screaming Females, Freezepop, Melissa Ferrick, The Nervous Eaters and Robin Lane. Their new single “In The City,” featuring Carissa Johnson, will be released on June 30, 2023 on A Diamond Heart Production. Linnea’s Garden is currently recording an EP, to be released Fall 2023.
