The band has been recognized as Best Cover Band in the Twin Cities numerous years in the Star Tribune and City Pages. Cover bands are plentiful these days but these purveyors of “music from a more permissive era” have some of the most sought-after players in town, a killer song list, heart, and a sense of humor.
A little over 10 years ago The Honeydogs’ singer-songwriter Adam Levy started a “bowling night” band with some of his favorite players in town. The playlist was largely dance R & B from the 60’s and 70’s but included songs that few would attempt: Yes’s “Long Distance Runaround,” Serge Gainsburg’s “Ford Mustang,” and Chicago’s “Does Anyone Know What Time it Is?”
The band includes gems by Desmond Dekker, Lee Dorsey, Candi Staton, The Clash, Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye, Aretha, & Jackson 5. After a few months of a weekly residency at Gluek’s in Minneapolis, the band became a sought-after for corporate events, weddings and summer festivals. The Stones, Stevie Wonder, Jorge Ben, and Chaka Khan coexist swimmingly in this dance-heavy rock funk repertoire.
The band is an 8-9 piece ensemble. Members of H $ B–Trent Norton (bass), George Scot McKelvey (guitar/voc), Jennifer Grimm (vocals), Katie Gearty (vocals), Matt Darling (trombone) Joe Savage (pedal steel/vocals), Stephen Kung (trumpet), Billy Thommes (drums), Peter J Sands (keyboards), Noah Levy (drums) Brian Gallagher (tenor sax)–have played with Prince, Peter Frampton, Brian Setzer, Soul Asylum, The Honeydogs, Prairie Home Companion, Rocket Club, and many more.
