Sam Cassidy with Hemma $15
Saturday, March 30 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Minneapolis songwriter Sam Cassidy draws on the life of ordinary people as well as his own experiences to paint vivid pictures of struggle and joy, hard work and taking it easy. Pulling on influences from classics like Springsteen and Petty, as well as contemporaries like Laura Marling and Waxahatchee, his songs explore the grey area between right and wrong and try to examine what brings people to do the things they do. Cassidy is currently writing a new record, about himself this time around- a novel idea for him, and experimenting with an augmented, smaller band, while incorporating new sounds to his songs with synths and drum machines.
Hemma is the nickname for Hannah Hebl who comes from a family of singers and has spent the last decade carving her own path as a songwriter in the country, folk and jazz scenes of the Upper Midwest. Sometimes with a full band, many times a soloist, she’s known to spellbind the audience with a stunning voice that paints a pastoral longing passed down from artists like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. A bright balladeer with lyrical prayers disguised as songs that offer protection in reincarnation, sustained love over distance and the courage to recognize ancestral addiction as a shadow to befriend and a curse to break. All the trappings of Americana storytelling with a drum machine for a modern twist. Her debut full length, Abalone Sky, has been produced by Sean Carey (S. Carey, Bon Iver) and will be released in November of this year under the name Abalone Sky.
