Sister Species is equal parts bitterness and longing, stillness and drive. Perching hearts heavy with ache and desire upon full-bodied guitar and accordion, bass and brass, sisters Abby and Emily Kastrul (P • PL) transform two decades of sibling rivalry into raw, unapologetic, experimental pop songs. The sisters’ harmonies amplify a tender candidness, lifted by danceable beats and unexpected trumpet arrangements that make you shiver, swoon, and politely request more. With the addition of Jake Baldwin (Har Mar Superstar, McNasty Brass Band), Ryan Hays (Matra), Lars Johnson (McNasty Brass Band), Sten Johnson (McNasty Brass Band, New Sound Underground), and Noah Ophoven-Baldwin (Percheron, Six Families, Drone Band), the Kastrul sisters leave their soft folk roots in the ground as they present their new full-length album Closer Now.
