Trempealeau (Peterson / Sutherland / Norton / Christenson) /Ryan Holweger $7
Saturday, November 25, 2017 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Trempealeau is an original band out of Minneapolis, led by guitarist and singer/songwriter Jimmy Peterson, along with longtime friends Zack Norton on bass/vocals, drummer Steve Sutherland and Josh Christenson on steel guitar.
Trempealeau represents an assemblage of style and aesthetic that suggests a kind of vintage americana, where the songs operate within a bare bones landscape somewhere between folk, country, rock and jazz. Trempealeau is not your average bar band, perhaps more like an answer to the question you forgot to ask.
The tunes are straight up and authentic – laid back melodies, lonesome guitars and a rhythm section that bring to light a sort of art-tinged mid-western cinema. They used to call it alt-country back in the days before beers were $10 each, and there was no such thing as a cover charge. But now, that might as well be several lifetimes ago.
As for trempealeau, the journey may well be the destination, one where it’s somehow always 2am, with the voice in your head telling you it might be time to find your way back home. Meanwhile, the band plays on. Sleepy-eyed and somewhat oblivious, the singer makes vague reference to the usual suspects – some girl, another long drive and the multitude of forgotten places somewhere lost in the rearview.
It’s an old story, a faded paint that plays an antiquated nostalgia like static on the radio. And sometimes, when it gets late and you’re tired enough, you start to think this old place seems a little unreal.
Things slow down, time slows down. It’s quiet now, and likely almost as empty as those thoughts that cross your mind. But while you’re looking back and thinking about where it’s all ended up, you can’t help but wonder about the way you came, and how you’re no less haunted by the ghosts of everything you’ve known.

“I couldn’t overcome feeling I’d been dropped into the novel world of Cormac McCarthy’s gritty western fiction meets pure Southern Gothic. Lyrics are imbued with a straightforward clarity and darkness. Melodies echo universal hard-scrabble characters and striking vistas….You can nearly feel the fading heart, the grieving, the loss, the warm fluids running across cold fingers.” – Refueled Magazine
After a number of years fronting Minneapolis alt-country/Americana band Western Fifth, Ryan Holweger started playing songs under his own name in 2012. In the past few year he’s been playing shows as both a solo acoustic act and with a full backing band, and he’s opened for a number of national touring acts, including Richard Buckner, Damien Jurado, Centro-Matic, St Paul & The Broken Bones, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and Sam Outlaw. Ryan is currently working on a new album with producer Mark Stockert (Brian Setzer, The Waifs, Tom Feldmen, etc.) at Underwood Recording.
