The Skally Line steams its way around the curves and bends of early American music: Stringband blues, Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes, early country and bluegrass, and Tin Pan Alley music. Along the way, we tell you forgotten stories about old Minnesota, play original music rooted in that history, and have a rip-roaring good time.

Minnesota songwriter and singer Becky Kapell picked up her teenage son’s guitar on a whim and began teaching herself to play at the tender age of 42. She had no intention of writing songs but as she taught herself basic chords, melodies began to emerge and then somewhat magically lyrics attached themselves to the melodies. She recorded 12 of those songs with old friends in Portland, OR (where Becky lived as a young adult) for her first record For Now, released in 2012. Based on the strength of that recording Becky caught the attention of Minnesota guitar ace Paul Bergen and as the two began playing together her song-writing morphed from the folkier sound of her first record to the more guitar-driven sound of her 2018 release That Certain Ache. Recorded and produced by Bergen, the record also features his signature guitar work as well as guitar and drums by esteemed Minnesota musician Erik Koskinen who mixed the record and helped with additional recording at his Real Phonic Studios.

Greta Ruth is an experimental folk singer/songwriter from Minneapolis. With finger-style acoustic guitar and poem-like vocals, her music is a meeting point of softness and dissonance, reflection and dynamic stillness.

St. Anthony Mann is the sonic venture of Minnesota natives Adam Bjoraker (vocals, guitar), Matthew Tessier (bass), DJ LaFontsee (guitar, vocals), Doug Justice (guitar, vocals), and Ben McKeown (drums). After returning from his time spent in Milwaukee, singer/songwriter Adam Bjoraker connected with old friends and collaborators to bring to the twin cities a new collection of songs that attempt to dream both within and without themselves. Adam released his debut album, Sun Idle Ways, on January 7th, 2020. 

Equal parts intimate and expansive, Emma Ruddock's songs render a vulnerable inner dialogue of love, longing and fleeting moments of human connection. Her serene voice floats over revolving layers of acoustic guitar, accompanied by a stream of memories and searing observations that leave you feeling both exposed and enamored by the complexities of being human.  A native of New Hampshire, she currently resides in Minneapolis MN and is recording her debut record.

In 2005, Ryan Montbleau and his band headed into Applehead Recording in Saugerties, New York, to cut their debut album. With nothing more than ambition and a relentless work ethic to their names, they bootstrapped the whole thing, maxing out credit cards to fund it themselves and launch their careers from the ground up. Twelve years, eleven records, thousands of shows, and 60 million Spotify streams later, Montbleau returned to the studio for a special one-night-only concert that would become the latest entry in his venerable catalog: ‘Woodstock Sessions.’

Admiral Fox is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and keyboard dabbler based in Minneapolis, MN. His real name is Dan DeMarco. He used to make music under that name, and some other names too, but not anymore. His homemade style of recording and beatmaking recalls Neutral Milk Hotel, Fleet Foxes, and a lo-fi Radiohead.

Call Puerto Rico is a band started by, and consisting of Gus Jennings, Phoenix Abernathy, Wyatt Henkel, and Elijah Herchert, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota. The band, already having been friends, formed in the summer of 2018. With Elijah on the keys and vocals, Wyatt on guitar, Phoenix on bass, and Gus on the drums, they create a loose, strung out sound, inspired by r&b, jazz and pop. Already having played shows at venues like 7th Street Entry, the Turf Club, The Aster Cafe and more spots around the twin cities. this is a group to watch out for in the near future. They released their first project, ‘Love is Clean’, in late 2018, and are now currently working on an album with producer/musician Dark Pony.

Alternative Americana rock band, The Changeups, are based in Minneapolis fronted by vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Alicia Kay.  They call Colorado their second home and frequently grace the stages of the 331 Club, Aster Café and Palmer’s as well as the Turf Club and Varsity Theater.  Members have played across the US and they have been interviewed and played on KFAI multiple times among other radio stations.  

batteryboy combines social awareness and personal revelation to create "music to deal with everything else." Founded by singer Cobey Rouse in 2011, the group includes multi-instrumentalist Eric Carranza, bassist Ray Ringer and violinist Shannon Frid-Rubin. Their lush sound of strings and Carranza's Eno-esque atmosphere give Rouse's emotionally charged lyrics a fitting place to come to hit home.

Julian Manzara is a jazz guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter from Minneapolis, MN. His quartet shows span fast tempos and dramatic ballads, balancing originals with standards, and funky backbeats with swing. He has been featured twice in the Twin Cities Jazz Festival and twice in the Eau Claire Jazz Festival.

Kurt Jorgensen has been long time band leader of the Kurt Jorgensen Band, releasing eight albums to date and receiving the praise of fans and critics alike. The Minnesota Music Awards has presented Kurt with Singer of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.

Brianna has toured nationwide with other artists as a bandleader and solo. Brianna has performed multiple times at South by Southwest, impressing industry luminaries and fans.

The two troubadours teamed up to record Brianna’s debut solo album “Wandering” with Kurt acting as producer and arranger for Brianna’s multi-instrumentalist talents. David Huss is a Minneapolis based singer-songwriter with a writing style rooted in Americana, folk and upbeat acoustic rock. David's songs are written with an optimistic perspective and are inspired by life's transitions.

In 2019 David recorded his first full length album - Intuition - and simultaneously
formed his band 'The Headwaters'. The past year consisted of full band performances around the state of Minnesota, finishing the album, and honing the sound of the full band into the finished upbeat folk rock sound they have become known for. 'The Headwaters'
are Lara Solveig on violin and harmony, Wesley Miller on percussion, Danny Gilles on keys and harmony, Noah Cameron on bass, and Hannah Hmeidie on on French Horn.

Johannes & The Secret Life is the unlikely meeting of musicians and songwriters from a variety of backgrounds. A fateful encounter at an open mic last spring led to the collaboration that birthed the new band. The two songwriters (Daniel, and Dan) draw inspiration from a range of early popular American music, Jazz, and Mediterranean folk. Their lyrics are influenced by years of wandering the globe— by choice or obligation— resulting in songs that speak of longing and reflection. Slow and brooding arrangements turn unexpectedly boisterous, with tempo changes and meandering chord progressions. Liam Gerard is a Minneapolis-based singer, songwriter, recording artist and performer. With roots in pop music of the 90’s to his adult addiction with Motown and the blues of Ray Charles. The music has been described as pulsing and melodic, with an attention to reflective lyrics based on experience. Tastes of alternative, blues, folk and pop give the music an eclectic feel as it spans multiple genres. Liam Gerard wrote all 11 tracks on his debut album “Belle and Music” and funded the entire project without a record contract  over the course of 25 months of work recording it. Each song represents a moment/ event in time captured in the mind of a man utterly impassioned by his muse; a woman he refers to as, Belle.

While the lyrics take a thoughtful look at feminine experience, the performances are energetic and fun, at times even playful.

Lily Rabuse is a young, emerging singer/songwriter from Minneapolis with a rare, pure sound. She just released her first CD, a 5-song EP, and is working on completing her first full album. Influenced by jazz melodies and music from idols like Nick Drake, Amy Winehouse and Joni Mitchell, she currently juggles song writing and performing with earning an undergraduate degree.

Harbor & Home is an alternative rock band from minneapolis, mn. Their sound embodies modern roots americana with classic rock n’ roll. Following the release of their first album “dark days” in 2014, the band toured across the u.s. sharing the stage with such acts as Jeremy Messersmith, Eric Hutchinson, Mark Chesnutt, Flor, From Indian Lakes and Austin Plaine. They recently released their sophomore album “fighter” in may of 2017 after working with producer and engineer Christopher Furst at Studio 65 in Ham Lake, MN. Their latest single "You Want It Too" was released in January of 2018.

Casey Virock is the lead vocalist of both Porcupine and Carousel Swan.

Porcupine was founded in early 2006 by Casey Virock. Hoping to springboard off recent success from his former band Space Bike, including opening slots for Frank Black, The Descendants, The Melvins, The Jesus Lizard, and Everclear, Porcupine began touring and playing the Midwest. Ian Prince has been supplying the backbone for top-notch indie bands like Story of the Sea, Houston, and Kid Dakota for well over a decade. Possessing the perfect combination of play-for-the-song sensibility and an “all or nothing” attitude, Prince is an undeniable powerhouse on the drums.

The Larry McDonough Quartet will perform timeless Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond pieces in different time signatures than those of Brubeck and Desmond, along with Larry McDonough odd-metered originals.

Larry McDonough is a St. Paul jazz pianist and singer, performing around the world and recording with his group the Larry McDonough Quartet as well as solo, and in duos and trios. He has performed with legendary saxophonist and composer Benny Golson, Trombonist Fred Wesley, and trumpeter Duane Eubanks, as well as a who’s who of local jazz artists, and was inducted into the Minnesota Rock Country Hall of Fame for his work in the group Danny’s Reasons. He has released nine CDs and DVDs as a leader. Alice in Stonehenge and other AcoustElectric Adventures has played on radio stations and streaming services around the world. The CD charted #18 on the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Jazz Album Chart. Simple Gifts reached number 29 on the CMJ Jazz Chart and also has been played on hundreds of stations around the country and throughout the world. He also is a lawyer and law professor selected by William Mitchell College of Law as one of “100 Who Made a Difference” over the 100-year history of the school. Larry directs pro bono legal services for the poor at Dorsey & Whitney.

There are more harmonies than shred but a tiny bit of shred in a soft way.

There are long notes on pads and there are synths that are nice to hear but boring to play.
I think drums are for mallets, but drummers tend to disagree.
I like songs that are about both what a person knows and what a person doesn’t know and I’m sometimes trying to help but mainly just observing.

Despite being an ensemble firmly rooted in tradition, the band presents their music without being shackled to history. They play their own compositions as well as takes on music of the era. Patty’s eclectic taste gives the band diverse influences including New Orleans Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Gypsy Melodies, Ragtime Piano Blues, Jug Music and 1930′s Popular Song. The core instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar and bass is light and swift, but also melancholic and lush when it needs to be. Dex Wolfe is a non-sequitur, sad folk boy, riff-rocking, avant-inclined, ear-mess, who can't settle on his own biography. He's performed with and/or recorded artists such as Rivers, Undlin & Wolfe, Humbird, Sister Species, Hemma, Pat Keen, Eliza Edens, Brent Penny, Emma Ruddock, and others. For the past several years he's mostly been holed up in his studio in Seward cutting his teeth as a freelance recording engineer & producer, quietly emerging for brief periods to tour and perform as a multi-instrumentalist in varying capacities. His debut solo record will someday emerge. In the meantime, you'll have to hear him live to discover what any of this may or may not mean.

Minnesota songwriter and singer Becky Kapell picked up her teenage son’s guitar on a whim and began teaching herself to play at the tender age of 42. She had no intention of writing songs but as she taught herself basic chords, melodies began to emerge and then somewhat magically lyrics attached themselves to the melodies. She recorded 12 of those songs with old friends in Portland, OR (where Becky lived as a young adult) for her first record For Now, released in 2012. Based on the strength of that recording Becky caught the attention of Minnesota guitar ace Paul Bergen and as the two began playing together her song-writing morphed from the folkier sound of her first record to the more guitar-driven sound of her 2018 release That Certain Ache. Recorded and produced by Bergen, the record also features his signature guitar work as well as guitar and drums by esteemed Minnesota musician Erik Koskinen who mixed the record and helped with additional recording at his Real Phonic Studios.

Laura Hugo is originally from the Navajo Nation but has been calling the Twin Cities her home for the last 7 years. She’ll make you feel the feels with her melodic and catchy tunes about heartbreak. Family Three are just two guys and one gal who love music. They would describe their sound as "Blindie-Soulk" - Blues, Indie, Soul and Folk. They have been playing some form of music since they were kids, but it wasn't until recently that they decided to take the next step, and are on the journey of finding out what it means to put the passion of music in the front seat.

The Maeflies, Minnesota’s Americana-country-rock ensemble of 5, have been playing their trademark sound for over 15 years. They deliver rich signature harmonies, hot guitars and songs that tell a story. The Maeflies know their way around any iteration of guitar, including pedal steel, mandolin and banjo. All the Maeflies can sing and pass around the lead vocal. Mae fronts the band; and you will discover why. “Honky-Tonk Jump plays swingin' Texas dance hall music in the tradition of Bob Wills, Milton Brown, Ernest Tubb and Spade Cooley with a sprinkling of Hank Williams and other early honky-tonk legends.  Three of the band members were regulars on A Prairie Home Companion - Dan Newton (accordion and vocals), Richard Kriehn (fiddle, mandolin and vocals) and Joe Savage (pedal steel/vocals). We also feature veteran musicians Tom Schaefer (fiddle), Dehl Gallagher (drums), Dan Lowinger (guitar) and Vaughn Asselstine (upright bass). Their music features signature twin and triple leads on accordion, fiddle, pedal steel and guitar with soulful vocals, all backed by a hard-swingin’ rhythm section. This band has fun and it’s contagious! 

Call Puerto Rico is a band started by, and consisting of Gus Jennings, Phoenix Abernathy, Wyatt Henkel, and Elijah Herchert, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota. The band, already having been friends, formed in the summer of 2018. With Elijah on the keys and vocals, Wyatt on guitar, Phoenix on bass, and Gus on the drums, they create a loose, strung out sound, inspired by r&b, jazz and pop. Already having played shows at venues like 7th Street Entry, the Turf Club, The Aster Cafe and more spots around the twin cities. this is a group to watch out for in the near future. They released their first project, ‘Love is Clean’, in late 2018, and are now currently working on an album with producer/musician Dark Pony.

The well oiled machine that is Doug Otto and the Getaways have been likened to the timeless sounds of Robert Johnson, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy. AJ Scheiber, the lead songwriter and guitarist for Twin Cities Americana band Wilkinson James, celebrates the release of his debut solo album Town Boy. Mixing the downhome storytelling of John Prine and the funky grooves of J.J. Cale, this collection of original story songs evokes the ghosts of America’s small towns and blue highways.

Beginning in Austin, TX, in the heart of their middle school days, David Kapsner (lead vocals/guitar/piano), Michael Jekot (lead guitar/vocals), and Tyler Rush (bass/vocals) came together to transcend the barrier of blues-rock into funky psych-soul through their various music ventures. Bringing the audacious and wonderfully talented Tim Durand (drums/vocals) into the picture has recently solidified the band with a roaring sound and strength to complement their vibe. Dedication to their music has evolved The Mammoths from garage rock to sophisticated blues-funk, and constant experimentation has allowed each member of the group to always stay true to their roots. Jekot, self-described as playing in the “grunge-endrix” style, notes that Kapsner’s soul-vocals, Durand’s pure metal, and Tyler’s deep, groovy funk stand out in the realm of rock, drawing influence from all over to create a sound that is entirely new, yet curiously familiar.

Tina Schlieske, originally hails from Minneapolis, MN and is best known for fronting the band Tina and the B-Side Movement, now Tina and the B-Sides.

Brooke Elizabeth is a singer/songwriter based in Minneapolis, MN. Writing, recording, and performing her own music has led her to develop her sound, which she classifies as indie/pop. Over the years, she has had opportunities to open for Keri Noble and lovelytheband, and two of her singles You and Like I Do were played on Cities97’s local show. Several of her most recent singles have also been added to Topsify curated playlists on Spotify. Her music draws influences from artists like Lennon Stella, Ingrid Michaelson, and Billie Eilish. Brooke Elizabeth uses songwriting to tell her stories that are relatable, and her voice is engaging and unique.

He has released records and performed live shows in five different decades, beginning as a teenager the Widgets in the 1980s, the Delilahs in the 1990s, X Ray Hip in the 2000s, Petty Demons in the 2010s, and White Sweater and Bubbles in the 2010s and into the 2020s. His latest project is called Bleek & Grimm, with longtime pal and collaborator Craig Teiken. Their self-titled debut EP (with a lot of help from Rich Mattson) was released in May. The late-in-the-month on Saturdays residency for Aaron Seymour and Friends will feature Bleek & Grimm, along with musical sets, cameos, and other surprises from some of Seymour’s past and present bandmates, noteworthy friends and other collaborators.

Rachael Kilgour is a Minnesotan songwriter and performing artist whose sincere, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. The 2015 grand prize winner of the esteemed international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest, Kilgour has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and by the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival.

The new album by Joshua Tree-based singer-songwriter Ryan Traster features that warm, worn-in vibe of an album that’s been in your cool parents record collection since you were a kid. Hi, I am Bryan Scott Miller. I am a singer/songwriter who grew up in Plymouth, MN. I grew up listening to a wide variety of music from The Replacements, Beatles and Bob Dylan to Wilco, Nirvana and the The Ramones. I have been playing shows for many years. I enjoy playing solo acoustic shows and I also play in a full 3 piece band called Velahsa which is punk/alternative rock.

Harbor & Home is an alternative rock band from minneapolis, mn. Their sound embodies modern roots americana with classic rock n’ roll. Following the release of their first album “dark days” in 2014, the band toured across the u.s. sharing the stage with such acts as Jeremy Messersmith, Eric Hutchinson, Mark Chesnutt, Flor, From Indian Lakes and Austin Plaine. They recently released their sophomore album “fighter” in may of 2017 after working with producer and engineer Christopher Furst at Studio 65 in Ham Lake, MN. Their latest single "You Want It Too" was released in January of 2018.

Alex Rossi is known for his high-energy performance teasing the ears with a mash-up of blues and rock inspired guitar licks. He combines the soul of Motown, the lyrical play of Hip Hop, and the psychedelic rock of Jimi Hendrix, into an original sound that defies genres.

A true product of the Minneapolis Sound, Alex was born and raised in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Although a nationally recognized songwriter, and accomplished guitar player, its his soulful vocals that people seem to identify with him the most. He is also an original cast member and co-creator of the Rhythmic Circus, an award-winning musical production with Broadway and international acclaim.

Indenting our television screens and radio transmissions with appearances on Showtime at the Apollo, Minnisingers, and recognizable commercials; Cole is painting the airways with her prismatic flare. Growing up in California and moving from Massachusetts to the Twin Cities, her songwriting is an eclectic blend of raw energetic passion and modern edge.

The Dregs are a new rock band from Minneapolis, who with only two instruments, capture a raw and engaging sound that competes with orchestras. Eilif (vocals, guitar, and piano) and Otto (drums and vocals) Dregni are brothers that started playing music at early ages. They have both played in other bands and school groups before playing together as The Dregs.
