Swing Brunch with Patty and the Buttons (FREE)
Patty and The Buttons preach the gospel of hot rhythm and happy feet. The band is similar to what you would find in a dance hall, cafe or nightclub anywhere around the world between 1920-1940. Despite being an ensemble firmly rooted in tradition, the band presents their music without being shackled to history. They play their own compositions as well as takes on music of the era. Patty’s eclectic taste gives the band diverse influences including New Orleans Traditional Jazz, Western Swing, Gypsy Melodies, Ragtime Piano Blues, Jug Music and 1930′s Popular Song. The core instrumentation of accordion, clarinet, guitar and bass is light and swift, but also melancholic and lush when it needs to be. Patty, mostly known as an accordionist doubles as the bands vocalist. His voice is inspired most by the old time hollers and croons from the dawn of recording once described as “Tom Waits meets Rudy Vallee.” More than anything, The Buttons is a group that is always enjoying themselves… Which seems to give audiences permission to do the same.

Billy Johnson & The Hillcats $10
Billy Johnson is a singer/songwriter from Minneapolis. Billy was the lead singer of The Hillcats, and is the lead singer of Billy Johnson’s Roadshow. He also has an acoustic duo called B-TEAM with George McKelvey. Billy has recorded 10 CDs. He strums a Gibson guitar with soul, and has a great vocal range.

Her recent work with established producer, Tommy Barbarella, has reflected a combination of her impactful lyrics and his expertise in piano and production. AirLands is intimate - and then sometimes reaches for the burning sun. There are drums, four parts, a cello, guitars, bass and a saxophone when it’s hot. There are more harmonies than shred but a tiny bit of shred in a soft way. We call it soft shred. There are long notes on pads and there are snyths that are nice to hear but boring to play. I think drums are for mallets, but drummers tend to disagree. I like songs that are both about what a person knows and what a person doesn’t know and I’m sometimes trying to help but mainly just observing. entirety.

Steps dives into some heavy subjects in Cole’s life - including years of depression, anxiety, and heartache. The album ebbs and flows - the last track, “Mornings High”, is about taking emotional, mental, and physical steps out of the darkness.

Twin Cities-based Americana band, Art Vandalay returns to the Aster to celebrate their new album Champagne & Chandeliers!
Blending the classic roots sounds of The Band and the modern indie sounds of Chuck Prophet and The Black Keys, Art Vandalay creates raw Americana rock with songs that are “impossibly catchy” (Duluth News Tribune).
A garage band at heart, Art Vandalay recorded their earlier albums (Dancin’ with Your Demons and Heaven’s Operahouse) themselves in Twin Cities’ basements and apartments, recorded and mixed by band leader Brandon Henry. Wanting to have the physical and creative space to experiment and rock out a bit more, they recorded at Future Condo Studios in Minneapolis with producer and engineer John Miller. Long-time band members Ben Cook-Feltz (keyboards, vocals), Drew Stevenson (bass), and Calvin Keasling (drums) joined Henry (vocals, guitar) along with special guests Rich Rue (slide guitar) and Colin Monette (guitar).

Formed in 1999, Kid Dakota released two albums on LOW's Chairkicker's Union - “So Pretty” (2002), and “The West is the Future” (2004) - and four albums on Graveface Records - “A Winner's Shadow” (2008), “Listen to the Crows As They Take Flight” (2011), “Denervation” (2018), and “Age of Roaches.” His new double album, “MICD” will be released in 2022.
Darren is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, engineer, teacher, and producer. Although he grew up in a small town in Western South Dakota, Darren cut his musical teeth in Minneapolis. A fixture on the scene there for two decades, Darren founded two critically-acclaimed bands (Kid Dakota and the Olympic Hopefuls), released nine albums, and won three Minnesota Music Awards including “Artist of the Year.” He toured extensively in the United States and Europe, sharing stages with rock and roll icons such as Soul Asylum and the Violent Femmes as well as indie rock stalwarts like LOW and Black Moth Super Rainbow. He owns a recording studio in NE Minneapolis - Homesteader Studio - and has two Bedlington Terriers - Dante and Diva.

The dumpster-folk, thriftstore-Americana duo, consisting of Mallory Graham & Scott Tyler and their menagerie of classic folk and homemade instruments, have been hobbling around the country in their 16ft camper with their two dogs since 2015, taking their songs to the far corners of the US and to the weird little towns they pass along the way. Love Is Gross...but it looks good on you, the newest collection of songs by The Rough & Tumble is a "fun project of kinda, sorta love songs" released February 11th, just in time for Valentine's Day. This comes on the heels of We're Only Family If You Say So, the 2021 album about what it means to be family, and what it means to lose it. With singles debuting on American Songwriter, The Bluegrass Situation and Grateful Web referring to the album as "a must listen," it has been embraced by fans for its stark honesty, unique storytelling and well-crafted melodies, especially at a time when families are deeply divided. With any luck, The Rough & Tumble will be traveling to a city near you in 2022.

After a little more than a decade-long break from playing, Coolidge announces their triumphant return to thecstsge and reintroduces their original brand of alt-country and Americana rock to the Twin Cities. Coolidge is Matty O’Reilly (lead vocals, guitar), Brock Guettler (bass, vocals), Steve Proper (lead guitar, vocals) and Cliff Ovadia (drums). This outfit has released two full length albums (Was it My Drinkin’ in 1998 and Me and the Bottle in 2004, both found frequently in used CD stores everywhere). The band currently holds the record for Most Bottles of Beers Consumed during a two hour live performance (84), a record that should have never been allowed in the first place nor legally safe to be surpassed or broken.

Californian turned Minnesotan, Cassandra Cole is a songwriter, visual artist, actor, athlete, and mother. Cole specializes in songwriting that showcases life’s rich tapestry - and refines each thread, creating a canvas that gives us a look into her soul. In her latest release, Steps, she writes about the human experience.
Steps dives into some heavy subjects in Cole’s life - including years of depression, anxiety, and heartache. Inspired by her favorite songwriters, such as Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, and Ella Fitzgerald, she uses her songwriting to tell stories. Tim Mahoney, who calls Minnesota’s Twin Cities home, found himself in creative territory vastly different from the love-and-breakup pop songs that have been his calling card for more than two decades. A former contestant on The Voice, Mahoney tapped into his socially conscious muse to write “We Should Be Shooting Stars,” an impassioned cry for peace and humanity in a world increasingly tolerant of gun-fueled bloodshed.
“This song is a first for me,” says Mahoney. “I believe in every word I’m saying. I’m really hoping it just helps unite and bring people together. This can sound cliché, but I think it really needs to start with one person – you and me with this song.”
The gripping, stripped-down mood of “We Should Be Shooting Stars” further punctuates its point – that we should be shooting for dreams, not shooting people, and that we need to rethink, rebuild, and reunite. Recorded in Mahoney’s home turf, “We Should Be Shooting Stars,” ready for digital release February 25, showcases the singer-songwriter’s emotive vocals and his solemn piano playing as well as strings and arrangements from Tommy Barbarella.

A singer/songwriter with equal parts heart, charm and individuality, Sophia Shorai has been a mainstay on the Mpls music scene for the past 10+ years. She was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Mpls, MN. A classically trained pianist, she began exploring jazz in her early teens, learning vocalese from her trumpet-playing father. With five self-released albums under her belt, she mixes old classics, modern revivals and her own pop gems with ease and soul. Shorai has collaborated with many of the Midwest’s finest and most celebrated musicians, has garnered international vocal recognition through television shows and films, and lends her voice to national and regional commercials.

Years ago, John Magnuson was in a Minneapolis band called the Carpetbaggers. John played rhythm guitar and wrote/sang many of the band's songs. The Carpetbaggers enjoyed some notoriety in the mid-to-late 90s when the band did three tours with Son Volt and shared the stage with such notables as Los Lobos, Alison Krauss, the Jayhawks, Dick Dale, and Paul Westerberg. In November of 2020, John released a record called Barely Noticeable. Half of the album is Indie/Folk-Rock-ish, and the other half is pretty much the same, except with a little more twang. When performing, John primarily plays his original material, with a few covers mixed in for good measure.
